AP: Records Suggest Pombo Lobbying Contacts (Abramoff)
Records Suggest Pombo Lobbying Contacts
By ERICA WERNER
Associated Press Writer

October 10, 2006, 4:52 PM EDT

WASHINGTON -- California Rep. Richard Pombo has insisted he was
never lobbied by Jack Abramoff. Records show the disgraced
lobbyist billed a client for at least two contacts with Pombo
a decade ago.

The lobbying records released by the Northern Mariana Islands
show that Abramoff billed once for calls to Pombo, chairman
of the House Resources Committee, and a second time for a
discussion with him, while lobbying in 1996.

On more than two dozen other occasions from 1996 through 2001,
Abramoff associates called or met with members of Pombo's staff,
including his chief of staff, the records indicate. As the contacts
picked up, Pombo voted Abramoff's way on a bill important
to Abramoff's clients.

Pombo spokesman Brian Kennedy disputed the reported contacts,
saying direct lobbying by Abramoff "never happened" and the
staff-level contacts were "greatly inflated." Abramoff,
who pleaded guilty in a congressional corruption investigation,
is "an admitted felon" who can't be trusted, Kennedy said.

5. Pombo's poll numbers are poor, too!

Poll shows Pombo, McNerney just 2 points apart

Hank Shaw - Capitol Bureau Chief
Published Tuesday, Oct 3, 2006

SACRAMENTO - A new poll released Monday presents further proof that Rep. Richard Pombo, R-Tracy, is in a tight race with challenger Jerry McNerney.

Conducted by well-known Democratic pollster Greenberg Quinlan Rosner, the survey of 413 likely voters done last week shows McNerney leading Pombo 48 percent to 46 percent; this is within the poll's margin of error, so the two are in a statistical dead heat.

Pombo spokesman Carl Fogliani dismissed the survey.

"They must be polling on Fantasy Island," Fogliani said. "We never release our polls, but that's way off. McNerney never gets out of the 30 (percent range) in our numbers."

2. Now that Foley and Delay are gone
Pombo is probably the slimiest member of Congress. He's from a district next to ours and we get to read about him frequently. He's the darling of welfare farmers and the building/development/real estate industry. His district was altered to bring in more Dems from the bay area suburbs and shift out some of the wealthy agribusiness people. Hopefully this Abramoff connection and the fact that he has a credible opponent for once will get his oily ass kicked out of DC at long last.

6. Pombo got donations from Abramoff and his associates
Abramoff himself, Kevin Ring, Todd Boulanger, Neil Volz, and some others at Greenberg Traurig all donated to Pombo in 2002-03.

Pombo voted against internet gambling regulation that Abramoff's clients opposed around that time, though it isn't possible to establish whether it was directly connected to any contributions.
