9 October 2006

ISLAMABAD - Nuclear-armed Pakistan, the last country to test an atomic weapon, said Monday it deplored North Korea’s nuclear bomb test and warned that it would destabilise the region.

Pakistan’s foreign office also denied there was any link between the test and disgraced Pakistani nuclear scientist Abdul Qadeer Khan, who has admitted selling nuclear technology to Pyongyang.

“Pakistan deplores the announcement by the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) that it has carried out a nuclear test,” foreign office spokeswoman Tasnim Aslam told reporters. “This is a destabilising development for the region.”

Pakistan was the last country to test a nuclear weapon in May 1998, days after India carried out several detonations. It is also the only country in the Islamic world that is confirmed as having the atomic bomb. “We had urged the DPRK to desist from introducing nuclear weapons in the Korean peninsula,” Aslam said. “It is regrettable that DPRK chose to ignore the advice by the international community not to conduct the test.”
