3. Infiltrates might very easily poison food
It is a well known fact that man policemen in Iraq are aiding the insurgents.
It would not surprise me, since it would be easy to do, that one or several of these policement helped poison the food in order to kill a high amount of officers.

17. Several hundred Iraqi police poisoned
BAGHDAD, Iraq - Several hundred Iraqi police fell sick from poisoning during a meal breaking their daily Ramadan fast on Sunday, Iraqi officials said. The cause was under investigation.

Ambulances and helicopters sent by the U.S. military ferried the sickened policemen to hospital after they fell ill at their base near the southern town of Numaniyah, said an Interior Ministry official, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to release details to the press.

Gen. Adnan Thabit, commander of the National Police, confirmed that the police members of the National Police's 4th Division had been struck by poisoning after the meal.

He would not say how many and said the incident was under investigation to determine the cause.

The Interior Ministry official said that up to 40 percent of the Division's 1,700 policemen may have been affected. He said authorities suspected they may have fallen sick from drinking water, raising the possibility that the poisoning was intentional.

20. Hundreds of Iraqi police poisoned
Hundreds of Iraqi policemen have been taken ill at a base in southern Iraq after the evening meal breaking their daily Ramadan fast.

Some of the policemen began bleeding from the ears and nose after the meal, said Jassim al-Atwan, an inspector for the environment ministry, who was serving as a liaison in the investigation between the health ministry and the base, located in the town of Numaniyah.

Between 600-700 policemen were affected to varying degrees, and 11 who had the heaviest amount of the food had died, al-Atwan told AP.

Some of the soldiers collapsed as soon as they stood up from them meal, others fell "one after the other" as they headed out to the yard in the base to line up in formation, al-Atwan said.

The division normally operates around the town of Salman Pak on the southeastern outskirts of Baghdad - an area of intense Shia-Sunni killings. The division was sent to the base in Numaniyah, 80km southeast of the capital, for further training.

Poisoning kills 7 Iraqi police, hundreds more ill

Reuters
Monday, October 9, 2006; 5:31 AM

NUMANIYA, Iraq (Reuters) - At least seven policemen died and hundreds of others fell ill after suffering food poisoning on Sunday evening in the town of Numaniya, south of Baghdad, police sources at the base said on Monday.

It was not clear if the poisoning at an Iraqi military base was deliberate but police sources said they arrested four cooks on Monday suspected of tampering with the food.

But the spokesman for the commander of the Iraqi armed forces said no one had died.

"Three hundred and fifty to 400 people were poisoned, they were given medical treatment instantly and four were taken to a nearby hospital and everyone has returned to normal," spokesman Brigadier Qasim al-Musawi told a news conference.

29. Ah, more benefits of privatization
From the end of the CBS News article...
Gov. al-Latif said the base's food and water are supplied by an Australian contractor working through Iraqi subcontractors. He did not identify the Australian company.
