CNN: Schwarzenegger, Angelides spar in only planned debate
What polls are they looking at? I haven't seen any with Arnie 17 points ahead or really even 10 for that matter.

http://www.cnn.com/2006/POLITICS/10/08/calif.debate.ap/...

SACRAMENTO, California (AP) -- Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and Democratic state Treasurer Phil Angelides sparred over the direction of the state's economy Saturday in their only debate planned for the gubernatorial campaign.

In a series of sharp exchanges, Schwarzenegger and Angelides differed over higher education fees, taxes and the state of the middle class.

Angelides said fees at the California State University and University of California systems have risen by thousands of dollars under Schwarzenegger, a Republican. Schwarzenegger noted that college fees rose dramatically under his predecessor, former Democratic Gov. Gray Davis, and that he has capped them this year.

He also attacked Angelides as wanting to raise billions in taxes if he is elected Nov. 7.

"I can tell by the joy I see in your eyes that you love to raise taxes," the governor said to Angelides. "Why don't you just say right now, 'I love increasing your taxes."'

Angelides said his plan was to raise taxes on the wealthy and close corporate tax loopholes, in part to help California balance its budget and fully fund education.

"Who can you trust to do the right thing by middle-class families in this state?" Angelides said.

5. Angeliedes is the result of the rapidly changing perspectives here
Six months in California time is a lifetime. Angelides was catapulted onto the scene when Arnold's numbers were in the toilet. Arnold image was resurrected by corporate media just in time for the election. Really there should no surprises here. Arnold has done nothing but be the whore he always was. Also, unless you were a political junkie you probably wouldn't even have known about any debate. Corporate media only screams loud and long about debates when THEIR sponsored republicans need boosting.

6. i didn't love the choice between westly and and angelides.
westly was a pro-corporate dem -- as if in cali corporations need MORE help.

and angelides campaigned only as the anti-gropenfuerher.

also i think the dems did a piss poor job fighting off the recall -- that where the cali dem achilles heel showed up.

9. We were all short changed a long time ago
Edited on Sun Oct-08-06 08:25 AM by nolabels
Unless a person was a multimillionaire and had plenty of bank on hand they could never realistically expect to run compatibly for the office anyway. Grey Davis was an anomaly and probably the was the last pauper that will ever get elected to the office unless the system is changed.

I think the party leadership made a few mistakes on the recall, but they were swimming upstream at the time (probably still are). It's all about the money and how much. It won't get changed till we, the citizens (all of us) change it for the good of all. Most people can't see how it is broke so it may be awhile.

14. i agree with much of your characterization.
i do think we{the democratic party} missed an opportunity with the recall however.

one thing we have a hard time doing is closing ranks when confronted by a strong assault .

on a state level we had an opportunity to turn the table son the republick party -- something we didn't do -- because too many were ambivalent re: gray davis.

it seems to me that's all ways a mistake if we're not talking about something illegal -- when confronted with illgality we should all ways let the chips fall where they may.

Arnold is so fucking stupid , what the fuck is this ? :

"I can tell by the joy I see in your eyes that you love to raise taxes," the governor said to Angelides. "Why don't you just say right now, 'I love increasing your taxes."'

how old is this stupid ignorant asshole ? that sounds like something you would hear grade school kids fighting each other over something stupid say.

the moderator was a Republican who kept criticizing everytime Angelides spoke. stupid fucker.

and yet Arnold still sucked AND Angelides did really well.

7. Schwarzenegger's is a DUMB FUCK
He's over rated and what the voters in CA did to unseat a democratically elected Governor(Gray Davis)was shameful.

16. Davis was not a disaster, he won re-election easily
the energy problem and other things were because of all the Republican Governors who served before him. it's because of Davis and what he did that we don't have it as bad as then now . the deals he made.

but the Republicans lost so they started spending a lot of money to get the petitions signed for recall along with the propaganda blaming him for everything in the media. and of course with Arnold in the race the media started whoring for him while attacking Davis.

and the same is happening now. along with moron Democrats thinking Arnold is a liberal. and loving to bash true liberal Democrats like Angelides.

23. This is so true.
I can't tell you how many people voted for Arnie in the recall election simply because he promised to roll back the car tax and give people a refund. Nothing to do with Davis. My sister voted for that reason - plus the fact that she hates unions. And yes, she is otherwise a dem voter. She and my husband will vote for him this time, too. Arnie is doing a great job at pretending to be a moderate these days, and he will undoubtedly win re-election.

8. I caught part of this last night. Der Gropenfuhrer is a stupid asshole.
And unfortunately, Angelides didn't seem to know how to play to the camera. Arnold did.

People listening on radio would probably be more likely to support Angelides.

I'm sure Ahh-nold will carry all the votes that originally went to Gary Coleman.

I can't imagine anyone else being stupid enough to vote for that asshole.

17. it was not - NOT - a debate
Edited on Sun Oct-08-06 11:53 AM by xxqqqzme
The entire show was set up by steroid boy's production staff - cripes even the helmut-haired 'moderator' was a rethug, who kept saying the questions submitted were from REAL California voters. What was up w/ the emphasis on 'REAL'? He repeatedly emphasized that word 4 or 5 times in the first 5 minutes.

Notice how steroid boy was looking into the camera but Phil was directed to a different camera, so he was in profile, until the last few minutes? The moderator had a negative comment, in the first half hour, right after Angelides spoke? It was a set-up and Angelides had no choice because steroid boy's handlers would NOT agree to a debate. It was pathetic. Once Angelides was speaking to the viewers, the real camera, he was most impressive.

I loved how steroid boy tripping over his accent, which became thicker the more he talked, had high praise for the Kennedy's and then started ticking off DEMOCRATIC social programs he admired. When asked the the one accomplishment he was most proud of: Angelides said the success and stability of the CA employees pension fund, which, as treasurer, he manages. He has done a great job w/ that fund.
steroid boy said he was proud he came to Amireeeka (he bought a plane ticket) and was able to have a career starting as a body builder (using stroids) then yadda, yadda, yadda, beeeyooteeful wife...kids....kennedys...public service family...bsbsbsbsbs...

20. Angelides did very well
He was articulate and came of as being much more intelligent in his responses and knowledgeable of what Arnold has done to the state. Emphasized his planned tax cuts for middle class and raising taxes on the wealthy. Unfortunately California voters do not like taxes and this is more important to them than just about anything. Ahnold looked stupid and repeated himself over and over, berated his imigrant done good status ad nauseum, and when he tried to talk fast you couldn't understand him. Phil had trouble finding the camera at first and was looking off to the side but then looked into it. Luckily they both were seated. It aired at 6:00 pm during the normal news time on the highest rated news channel(in my area) which of course declared Ahnold the winner since he didn't do anything excessively stupid. Phil was very quick with the barbs went for the jugular on the police pension issue and there was some fighting. It astounds me that any one would vote for Ahnold, he is just so god damn dumb. Phil won on every issue in my book. Ahnold is an embarrassment to all the citizens of California but they just don't realize it.

21. Suburbanite ignoramusia
Californian surburbia is the 'non-negotiable' American way of life, Dick Cheney's oil cabal whores out like a harem. White flight, highlighted there, was a dumbing down and fleecing of inherently racist, well-to-do caucasians thinking surburban life better, but unwittingly still, pay for its costs and blame non-whites as they're programmed to do, dude, totally, shopping now, don't bother me, whatever, like, so tch uncool...
