AFP: 'Governator' shuns Bush ahead of California election battle
Agence France Presse: 'Governator' shuns Bush ahead of California election battle
Oct 04

Two years after lending star power to George W. Bush's re-election campaign, Arnold Schwarzenegger has distanced himself from the US president ahead of upcoming polls, analysts say.

The Hollywood actor-turned-Republican politician is a strong favourite to win November's gubernatorial race in Democrat-dominated California, where Bush's approval ratings have slumped to record lows.

But even while Schwarzenegger enjoys a commanding lead over his Democrat rival Phil Angelides in recent polls, analysts say the incumbent is wary of being associated with Bush.

Schwarzenegger did not meet Bush during his trip of California on Tuesday. A spokesman for Bush said the focus of the visit was the congressional races, while Schwarzenegger said there was "no reason" for a meeting.

"President Bush is coming out here not to help California but to do fundraising in California. So there's no reason for me to meet him because I am attending to business," Schwarzenegger said....

2. Ahnold is trying to run as a moderate Dem.
Since Angelides thus far has remained invisible and the Gropper has a big lead, why risk losing some support by being seen with the chimp - especially when the only ads being run in opposition to Ahnold are being sponsored by the Dem. Party showing Ahnold and chimp being cozy in earlier times.

3. I was thinking the same thing...where IS Angelides?
There is so much to run against, but he seems to be working hard to lose. Isn't that powder dry enough yet?

4. Who the hell knows? He sure isn't moving the meter out here.
And it's funny that Ahnold is avoiding bush. Hilarious, in fact. And in both ends of the state! Won't have him visit Sacramento, and he's nowhere around West L.A., and bush's presence here had all the streets blocked off through the evening rush hour - straight through the middle of the neighborhood where der Gropenator lives.

5. After the bloody primary battle against Westly, it's
as though he lost interest in the race and doesn't want the job anymore. What else could explain his not running ads in a state in which those ads are the campaign?

I voted for Westly, only because I thought he'd be a better candidate against Ahnold. At this point, anyone would be a better candidate.
