Google boss warns politicians about Internet power
Edited on Tue Oct-03-06 10:48 PM by cal04
Imagine being able to check instantly whether or not statements made by politicians were correct. That is the sort of service Google Inc. boss Eric Schmidt believes the Internet will offer within five years.

Politicians have yet to appreciate the impact of the online world, which will also affect the outcome of elections, Schmidt said in an interview with the Financial Times published on Wednesday.

He predicted that "truth predictor" software would, within five years, "hold politicians to account." People would be able to use programmes to check seemingly factual statements against historical data to see to see if they were correct.

Writing in the Sun tabloid, the Google boss said the online world has empowered ordinary people with the ability to challenge governments, the media and business.

2. I'm a believer that the Internet(s) is going to change politics...
It will be a new experience for politicians to actually tell the truth. They're getting a good taste of it with the upcoming election.

Now, if Google could just guarantee honest elections!

3. Well you already can
Thomas is online, there's press conferences and speeches at every govt agency web site, newspapers print and store text of speeches and statements. There's no reason at all for people to post articles about what politicians say, or worse what pundits say politicians say. Other than sifting through a long legal document or piece of legislation, I don't have any use for what the media has to say about politics.

5. AND, let me tell ya', that power is the one thing that keeps me,...
,...clinging to my own vision of positive change in such a dark environment.

Yes, indeed. We'd better be vigilant about protecting the internet path toward REAL government transparency and accountability, which can be accomplished without giving up a drop of our own right to privacy.

10. This is EXACTLY why Congress is trying to destroy the free Internet
They most certainly DO NOT WANT an electorate that can verify a candidate's record or see whether or not an elected official is telling the truth. It would be the end of "democracy" as they know it.
