CNN/Reuters: Too much testosterone kills brain cells
Too much testosterone kills brain cells
September 27, 2006

WASHINGTON (Reuters) -- Too much testosterone can kill brain cells, researchers say, in a finding that may help explain why steroid abuse can cause behavior changes such as aggressiveness and suicidal tendencies.

Tests on brain cells in lab dishes showed that while a little of the male hormone is good, too much of it causes cells to self-destruct in a process similar to that seen in brain illnesses such as Alzheimer's.

"Too little testosterone is bad, too much is bad but the right amount is perfect," said Barbara Ehrlich of Yale University in Connecticut, who led the study.

Testosterone is key to the development, differentiation and growth of cells and is produced by both men and women, although men produce about 20 times more of the hormone....

***

Writing in the Journal of Biological Chemistry, Ehrlich and colleagues said their findings meant people should think twice about supplementing with testosterone, even if it does build muscle mass and aid recovery after exercise....

and there have never been any studies about how standardized tests have demographic bias...and black people are stupider than white people because white people do better on the SATs...because standardized tests have been SHOWN to be objective criteria of INTELLIGENCE, rather than socialization into a particular style of learning.

29. It also weakens the immune system.
That's why healthier men tend to develop more characteristically masculine traits like broad shoulders and deep voices. If an adolescent boy's immune system isn't strong enough to handle a high testosterone load, his endocrine system will recognize that and testosterone production will be less. But there are lots of hormones that can harm you in large concentrations. Estrogen can contribute to circulatory problems and increased risk of breast cancer if too much is administered.

Also, women shouldn't bash testosterone too much -- females secrete it as well, and it plays a key role in female sexual pleasure. Low testosterone for a woman means a lot fewer orgasms.

32. But if you're a woman, it will make you a faster runner
Length of a woman's ring finger reveals her sporting ability

28 September 2006

For an instant guide to how fast a woman can run, take a look at her hands. Women whose ring fingers are longer than their index fingers are quicker on their feet, offering a simple way of predicting who will win a race, researchers have found.

The discovery could be a boon for parents wondering whether to shell out large sums on coaching - by providing an indication of their daughter's chances of turning into a sports star.

Unlike men, most women have ring fingers that are shorter or the same length as their index fingers. Only a few have longer ring fingers.

The finding adds to evidence that the ratio between the two fingers - not the length itself but their length relative to each other - is associated with a number of different personality traits, which include sexuality, fertility, intelligence, aggressiveness and musical ability. The difference is believed to be linked to the level of the male hormone testosterone, to which the foetus is exposed in the womb. Scientists have suggested that the higher the level of testosterone, the more masculine the resulting foetus is likely to be, with its associated traits of strength, fertility and mathematical ability.

Unfortunately, while a longer ring finger is associated with some desirable traits, such as musical skill, a longer index finger is associated with others, such as intelligence, past research has shown.

41. I knew it! "Cranial Testosterone Poisoning" is real!
I spent quite a while as the "token male" in a clinic defense movement. Sometimes the women would forget I was around, so I got to hear lots of female locker-room talk. Among this was the notion of "Cranial Testosterone Poisoning", or CTP, which they deemed to be epidemic -- and lo and behold, fifteen years later, science has at last caught up with the feminists!

Ehrlich's team tried the same thing with the "female" hormone estrogen, just to be fair.

"We were surprised, but it actually looks like estrogen is neuroprotective. If anything, there is less cell death in the presence of estrogen," she said.
