Tony Blair says it will be hard to leave office, but is the right thing to
MANCHESTER, England (AP) - Prime Minister Tony Blair said Tuesday it will be hard for him to leave office but acknowledged it was the right thing to do. In a wistful but forward-looking speech to his last annual Labour conference as leader, Blair told the party it must remain bold if it is to hold on to power and said the only legacy he cared about was Labour's winning a fourth term.

Delegates, grateful for the three straight election victories to which Blair led their party, listened raptly as he spoke, and frequently interrupted him with cheers. Many waved supportive placards: "Too young to retire" said one. "Tony, you made Britain better," read another. "Winner" declared a third.

In an hour-long speech, Blair fondly recalled his start in politics as a young parliamentary candidate in 1983, and said Labour had changed the terms of debate in British politics during his time as leader.

"The truth is, you can't go on forever," he said. "That's why it is right that this is my last conference as leader.

12. Sad that he blew it all so spectacularly.
I remember the promise that his government started out with, but all he'll be remembered for is
being Bush's poodle, and the disaster in Iraq.

I still think he's an intelligent man, but seems incapable of acknowledging where he might have
gone wrong, so he's unable to put things right before he goes.

Sad.

26. right
I don't really understand how "an intelligent man" such as Tony Bliar can wind up as a lapdog to a fool like Boosh. You're right--if he could just acknowledge some mistakes history would be kinder. But he stubbornly refuses to. I'm not sure if the fault is in the man for that or if there are pressures at work that we do not entirely understand. I suspect the latter.

16. It's hard to let go, admits Blair
26 September 2006

Tony Blair admitted "it's hard to let go" as he used his last Labour conference speech as leader to urge the party to unite and win a fourth term.

He won a long standing ovation, telling an emotional Labour gathering: "You're the future now, make the most of it."

Winning the next election was the only legacy he had ever wanted, he said.

He praised Gordon Brown and laughed off his wife's alleged criticism: "At least I don't have to worry about her running off with the bloke next door."

It's not hard to let go. It's just going to be hard to block the investigations when you no longer are in power.

25. It's hard to let go if you're a power-freak and have become a power-addict
Like Tony

Unfortunately, like Maggie, he has pushed his party so much to the right, that it may be hard to change things back.

Both of them are good arguments for term-limits on Prime Ministers.
