Casey increases lead over Santorum (14 Points Quinnipiac)

Democrat Bob Casey appears to have doubled his lead over Sen. Rick Santorum in Pennsylvania's Senate race, according to a poll released today.

Mr. Casey had a 14-point lead in the Quinnipiac University Poll, with 54 percent of likely voters saying they planned to vote for him compared to 40 percent for Santorum. One percent said they wouldn't vote and 6 percent said they didn't know. Casey had a seven-point lead among likely voters in a match up between the two in the same poll on Aug. 15.

Yesterday, a state judge said Green Party candidate Carl Romanelli would be removed from the ballot because the party did not have enough valid signatures in its nominating petitions -- a move pundits said would help Mr. Casey.

In a three-way matchup, Casey led Santorum 51 to 39 percent among likely voters with 4 percent saying they would vote for Mr. Romanelli, the poll found. Five percent were undecided.

9. Pollster Says Santorum's Momentum is "Dead in the Water"
The headline on www.pennlive.com's website is "Poll finds Santorum 'dead in the water'". It is from the Harrisburg PA Patriot-News.

"A Quinnipiac University poll out this morning finds that U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum's momentum has stalled as Bob Casey Jr. enjoys a 51 percent to 39 percent lead among likely voters. A month ago, the same poll showed Casey leading with a 48 to 42 percent. More than half of Casey supporters say their vote is against the incumbent.

"Sen. Rick Santorum’s comeback momentum has been stopped dead in the water," Quinnipiac pollster Clay F. Richards said in a statement. "Santorum’s attack ads against Casey have failed to spark voters’ support, and 50 percent of voters say the Senator does not deserve re-election.

“Casey, just like his father, is attracting a significant number of Republican votes — perhaps enough to make it hard for Santorum to make it back to Washington," Richards said. Casey leads in all regions of the state except the center and northwest, where they are tied. The Quinnipiac poll was conducted Sept. 29-24. It has a margin of confidence of plus or minus 3.2 percentage points.
