5 Ex-Joint Chiefs Oppose Bush Detainee Effort
5 Ex-Joint Chiefs Oppose Bush Detainee Effort: Sen McCain
Wednesday September 20th, 2006 / 19h24

NEW YORK -(Dow Jones)- Five former chairmen of the joint chiefs of staff have backed efforts by a group of Republican senators opposing President George W. Bush's plan to write rules dealing with the handling of terrorism suspects, one of the senators announced Wednesday.

Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., said the five former military leaders have written letters opposing the administration's version on legislation governing the treatment of detainees. Ex-chief Colin Powell, who earlier stated his opposition to the Bush proposal, was joined in that position by former chiefs John Shalikashvili, William Crowe, John Vessey and Henry `Hugh" Shelton, McCain's office said in a statement.
McCain initially was joined in opposition to the Bush initiative by Sens. Lindsey Graham, of South Carolina, and John Warner, of Virginia.

4. I think it might be fair to say that former members of the JCS
actually care about those who serve in uniform. I can vouch for Admiral Crowe; an Officer and a Gentleman indeed.

8. It's so disheartening to see how far they will go
If you haven't read it already, the House bill will make you sick. I recommend keeping a large bucket handy while reading it.

Urge Your GOP Rep and Senator to "Legalize" Torture
by leveymg
Thu Sep 21, 2006 at 09:57:33 AM PDT
The Republican-controlled Congress is on the verge of passing a Bill authorizing the President to commit war crimes and torture after the fact. A version of that measure passed the House Judiciary Committee last night after a party-line vote. The GOP Bill also abolishes habeas corpus for anyone, U.S. citizens and others, alike -- deemed "enemy combatants". See, http://www.dailykos.com/...

For those legislators who voted in favor of such a law, this vote was a virtual invitation to indictment for war crimes the rest of the world is obligated to prosecute under the UN Convention Against Torture.

The best thing Democrats can do is to hand the GOP another length of rope, and stand out of the way after the final party-line vote is counted. When the trap door opens, it'll be every Member of Congress who passed the measure. By their complicity after the fact in war crimes and torture, the GOP Congress may end up swinging alongside Bush and his subordinates down the chain of command that ordered, incited, assisted or carried out war crimes or torture resulting in death.
