Bush Vows To 'Defend Civilization'
Note that Bush blames the Supreme Court for this "debate"----not a mention his/WH actions!

Bush Vows To 'Defend Civilization'

cbs5.com

September 15, 2006

Facing a GOP revolt in the Senate, President Bush urged Congress on Friday to join in backing legislation to spell out strategies for interrogating and trying terror suspects, saying "the enemy wants to attack us again."

........

Responding to criticism from former Secretary of State Colin Powell and others, Mr. Bush said it's "flawed logic" and "unacceptable to think" there's any way to compare the actions of the U.S. and the actions of terrorists.

Mr. Bush denied that the United States might lose the high ground in the eyes of world opinion, as Powell suggested on Thursday.

........

Rebellious Republicans, led by Sen. John McCain of Arizona, rejected Mr. Bush's proposal for interrogating and prosecuting terrorism suspects, saying it would jeopardize the safety of U.S. troops.

......

"If not for this program, our intelligence community believes al Qaeda and its allies would have succeeded in launching another attack against the American homeland," he said.

"Unfortunately the recent Supreme Court decision put the future of this program in question. ... We need this legislation to save it."

1. Do you trust Powell, McCain, Warner, etc?
Or do you trust W and the other chickenhawks in his administration?

2. Chimpy can't figure that one out:

>>to protect intelligence professionals who are called on to question detainees to obtain vital information. "They don't want to be tried as war criminals. ...<<

So? Well, Chimp***ker: If they don't want to be tried as war criminals, it's very easy... All they've got to do is not to commit any war crimes (or "crimes," since this is not a war, as per your very "own" Gonzo...).

Simple, isn't it? Ya don't wanna be tried for committing crimes? Then don't commit any crimes!

Too simple for the chimperror...

3. Defend civilization? He's done nothing but destroy it so far!
This is either A) the greatest about-face in history, or B) the latest in a never-ending series of empty rhetoric and lies.

(HINT: the answer is B!)

12. Ask him to define "Defend Civilization"..
Would that be akin to how he is sworn to defend the Constitution?

17. Very good point.
I would much rather see our executive branch actually defend the constitution than pretend to defend civilization. In fact it does neither, and we all suffer for it.

27. Exactly!
The constitution was designed to take care of civilization. If he would just do his job and follow his oath, instead of trampling on the constitution and attempting to retroactively rewrite it to defend his own sorry ass, we wouldn't be in this mess we're in!

31. It would probably come out the same way he described a
sovereign nation.

"Tribal sovereignty means that. It's sovereign," he said. "You're a .. you're a ... you've been given sovereignty and you're viewed as a sovereign entity," - GWB

11. Far be it from me, a lowly citizen
to point out the obvious, but if he plans on saving civilization, he might remember that torture is not considered civilized behavior. He needs to be led away, quietly, to a nice padded room where he can't harm himself or others. Maybe we could arrange for him to make speeches to pictures of adoring audiences, and give him a podium, and let him continue his delusions where nobody gets hurt.

He apparently believes that he is the only one who knows the truth, who realizes the great threat that be thinks only he can save us from. These are not the words of a brave, confident leader, they are the rantings of an insane sociopath who is in the process of going through a complete meltdown.

Can you imagine the Republican reaction, if Clinton had talked about saving civilization, demanded the right to hold secret trials, and torture people he considered enemies, based on nothing but his own whims? Apparently, Chimpy thinks everybody is wrong but him. He is really, and truly, insane.

14. Bush is juggling one too many lies. And one big over reach
of a foreign policy. I doubt if most Americans believe it's his job is to "defend civilization", and I'd bet tomorrow that the other Western Democracies would beg to differ.

15. Someone help me out here... If they pass legislation, does it
automatically make it legal AND constitutional. Do not their laws still need to square with the constitution, or is there room in the constitution for torturing suspected enemies? Also, what about the Geneva Convention as we signed it? Does that mean nothing in the International Court if the US just changes the law here?

24. Bush2 is more of a threat to civilization than al Qaeda
It's just another sound bite, designed to rally knuckle-dragging neanderthals and frighten soccer moms.

We'd all be better off if Bush2 spent the weekend watching football with a bowl of pretzels and Cheney went hunting with Rove and Rumsfeld.
