(Ohio) Flag burners sentenced (apologize, serve two days at VA hospital)
Four New Philadelphia teens who admitted damaging U.S. flags at Tuscora Park in New Philadelphia earlier this summer have a lot of apologizing to do.

Nickalas L. Goodwin, 17; Vincent Ruegsegger, 16; Lucas P. Sankar, 18; and Jaymes E. Urban, 17, learned Tuesday they will spend two days in a veterans hospital at Cleveland. They also must issue a public apology in November.

During a sentencing hearing Tuesday, Tuscarawas County Juvenile Court Judge Linda A. Kate commended the four for the apologies theyve made so far to city and park officials but said it wasnt enough.

Its one thing to make the apologies youve already made, she said. Its another thing to look these veterans in the face and explain what you did and hear what they have to say.

1. Uh, since when do papers print names
of juvenile offenders?

Is this some kind of special Republican shaming court, or what?

6. Yeah, my bullshit detector is flashing....
This is vandalism, apparently, but why all the "patriotic" fervor?

20. Constantly......
But when he sentenced 17-year-old Jesse Howard and 16-year-old Dailyn Campbell to 60 days in a detention center Tuesday to be served after football season Judge Gary F. McKinley made it clear his decision wasnt about the boys not taking responsibility but was instead about finding a ticket out of a troubled life.

Sydnor was the youngest of three boys involved in the crash on Feb. 6. Testimony showed that Christopher Clark, 16, and Deon Roberts, 15, stole a 1997 Cadillac from a womans home, picked up Sydnor and went to the library at 3434 E. Livingston Ave. After the boys were kicked out of the library for causing a disturbance, Sydnor got behind the wheel of the car, backed out of a parking spot and drove forward into the building.

3. If you damage someone else's flag, you are damaging private property
The fact that the item is a flag is not relevant. They stole and damaged private property, and it does not matter if it's a flag or a dildo. They must be held accountable under the law.

I did not know that they had stolen the flags.

7. Sure.
But if they damaged somebody's dildo they probably wouldn't be doing community service in a VA hospital and have to apologize to veterans.

12. exactly....
There is no greater expression of Free Speech than burning the flag, IMHO.

Still, I think there will be some vets there who tell them they fought for their right to burn that flag and by and large this will be a much more positive experience for them than the Judge is imagining..

8. True, but the sentence was inappropriate
because the flags weren't from the VA and the veterans there not harmed.

9. True....so why treat the kids like Benedict Arnold?
I smell some RW bullshit here. Methinks the ACLU would be interested in a case of politicizing a misdemeanor vandalism charge.

17. True. The kids are being punished for larceny and vandalism. . .
not "treason"

That's all this flag burning incident is all about. Everything else is bullshit.

19. Absolutely correct! Vandalism is NOT a freedom of speech issue
Get your own flags and burn them if thats what you want to do. The punishment does seem a little stupid, veterans have fought to defend our rights and liberties, they did not fight to defend a symbol. They should apologize to whomever the flags belonged to.

10. If I were a veteran at that hospital
I'd ask the boys to bring some flags and we'd go out in front of the hospital and burn them. "Conservatives" want the flag protected. Liberals want the constitution protected. And Oh Lord, would I beg to be arrested.

More right wing absurdity. The boys should be punished for destroying something that is not theirs and such punishment should not include apologizing to veterans.

11. That reminds me of a quote I heard the other day:
"Liberals may wrap themselves in the Constitution and burn the flag; But conservatives wrap themselves in the flag and burn the Constitution."

16. Some irony from the judge:
Do you understand there are countries in the world where people are rounded up by the government and put in metal boxes to die in the desert? she asked. You dont have to worry about that because of the hundreds of men and women who have been willing to put their lives on the line. You think so little of their sacrifice that you would do this to amuse yourself?

21. This is the fault of the republican congress
These kids would never have thought of doing it, except that this was the week the republicans decided to push the flag burning amendment. The kids should have been punished for theft and vandalism. The sentence is inappropriate. Judge Kate is a Democrat. She should know better.

No doubt Bush will do this some day soon when he tries to explain why he sent troops into a war based on lies and didn't properly equip them.

I'd like to hear what those vets will say to him!
