Rumsfeld: US able to take new fight despite Iraq
By Kristin Roberts

NAVAL AIR STATION FALLON, Nevada, Aug 28 (Reuters) - U.S. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld warned potential adversaries on Monday that the United States remained capable of responding to military threats at home and abroad, despite its troop commitments in Iraq and Afghanistan.

"We are capable of dealing with other problems were they to occur," he told troops at an airfield in the Nevada desert.

"It would be unfortunate if other countries thought that because we have 136,000 troops in Iraq today, that we're not capable of defending our country or doing anything that we might need to do," he said in response to a question about military options for dealing with Iran.

2. Hell, we can't even fight in Iraq and Afghanistan!
Is this another "bring 'em on" moment for this administration?

They just love the smell of endless war.

4. Rumsfeld also said ...
... in September 2003, when asked about the growing insugency in Iraq:
"A platoon out of any one of my battalions could defeat the threat, readily.”

So how's THAT goin', Rummy?

27. That reminds me of a scene from "The Great Locomotive Chase"
A Southern train is carrying Confederate recruits to the front line. One of the Southern soldiers gets up and tries to rally the others.

Soldier: "How many Yankees can a Southerner whup?"

Everyone: "Five!"

Soldier: "How many?"

Everyone: "Ten!"

Soldier: "That's more like it! Why, just one company of us Southerners, armed with pop guns, can wipe out an entire regiment of Yankees!"

5. What's unfortunate don,
is that you are still where you are. Your army should tell you where to stick it. You are breaking the Armed Forces because you will not admit your policy ideas and war making ability are good for shit. You're a better neo-con than you are an American.

They just don't get it. The American people are tired of terra! terra! terra! and they aren't going to buy off on a commitment of more money and resources on a new boogeyman.

10. Even Katrina rescue efforts were undermined
by National Guard troops and supplies being in Iraq instead of in Louisiana where they should have been. Rumsfeld is a cretin. He is rattling a broken sabre, and everyone knows it.

19. Meanwhile there are "war games" being conducted by Iran
Russia and their regional allies as well as China and their regional allies-but I'm sure that is no big deal to Mr. Revolution in Military Affairs and the mercenary force multiplier industries that don't care about protecting defending or preserving OUR Constitution, which our military take an oath to do-unlike the treacherous "leadership" of the BFEE.

21. Don't stone me, but he's partially right
The Air Force and Navy still have enormous striking power at their disposal and can maintain it for quite a while. Navy F/A-18s and Air Force F-15Es and F-16s can drop plenty of ordinance. B-52s and B-1Bs can launch clouds of long-range cruise missiles and guided and unguided bombs. Cruise missiles can also be launced by the Ticonderoga-class cruisers, Arleigh Burke-class destroyers, and Los Angeles-class submarines. And those 5-inch guns on the destroyers and cruisers can spit out 20 rounds a minute, each shell weighing 70 pounds and with a range of nearly 15 miles.

The real problem here is that we seem to lack the troops and logistics to invade and hold the places that we flatten. Bombing does not conquer land in and of itself. You need the famous "boots on the ground" to take, occupy, and administer what we bomb. I think we can currently muster up a troop of Boy Scouts to occupy Tehran.

Draft, anybody?

32. It's a shame they couldn't have a draft just for Bush supporters.

They'd sing a different tone when they and their kids and grandkids had to "go over there and kick ass."

33. That remark means one thing to me: Iran.
After the election, that's the plan. They want to get it done before King George's term is (mercifully) up. Things could quickly go from bad to worst case scenario.

34. Exactly. And gas at $10/gallon+ for their BigOil contributors,
imagine their bloated retirement plans! Not that they'd really need 'da boost' as they R right now...

Rummy & Co really support the troops! (As long as havemores can and sure will profit from their sacrifices...).

And those lefty Blue States in the North can just freeze to death as far as Darth Chenious & Rumdumb R concerned... their "sacrifice" will be worth it. /sarcasm
