Two bomb plot suspects freed

BRITISH police investigating a suspected plot to blow up transatlantic airliners freed two suspects today and obtained permission to continue questioning nine others.

Police charged 11 people yesterday in the suspected plot and had been holding 11 others pending a decision on whether to charge them.

They did not name the men they freed today, but Sky News reported that one was Tayib Rauf of Birmingham. His brother Rashid Rauf has been arrested in Pakistan, where authorities called him a ringleader of the plot.

Police later said they had obtained a judge's permission to continue questioning eight of the additional suspects for a further week, and one for just 24 more hours.

7. They took computers from several internet cafes
See eg http://www.gulf-times.com/site/topics/article.asp?cu_no=2&item_no=102220&version=1&template_id=38&parent_id=20

Also, one on the men charged has been described as a computer salesman:

Waheed Arafat Khan, 24: A computer salesman. Friends called him Arafat, say he never recovered from the death of his father on a pilgrimage to Pakistan.

Abdullah Ahmed Ali and Waheed Arafat Khan, both from east London, Umar Islam, from High Wycombe and Tanvir Hussain, of no fixed abode, spoke only to confirm their names and addresses.

All four were charged with conspiracy to murder and with plotting to detonate homemade explosives on planes after smuggling the components on board.

So he may have had access to other computers. I don't expect they'd find anything stored on the 'public' computers, but I suppose they may be trying to reconstruct email sessions, and a history of websites visited. I think they gave the 400 figure out to say "it's hard work" (it can't hurt when they ask for next year's budget, can it?)

5. If the story about the prepared martyr's video is true,
there may well have been something to this plot. Indications are that the Bush administration forced the hand of the British police services before they were ready to start arresting people. If that is the case, it would make sense that they decided to grab everyone and sort things out later.
