Bush rating best in six months

WASHINGTON The arrest of bomb plotters in London has helped buoy President Bush's approval rating and the prospects for Republican congressional candidates in November.

A USA TODAY/Gallup Poll taken Friday through Sunday put Bush's approval rating at 42%, the highest in six months. His approval rating on handling terrorism was 55%, the highest in more than a year.

Support for an unnamed Democratic congressional candidate over a Republican one has narrowed to 2 percentage points. For the past year, Democrats have led by much wider margins.

The success in disrupting a plot to bomb U.S. airliners "changes the way people evaluate the job that he's doing on terrorism," says Christopher Gelpi, a Duke political scientist who studies foreign policy and public opinion. "It also changes the subject of public discussion from the war in Iraq, which people are not very happy about." Gelpi cautioned the impact could be fleeting. "One event (in London) is likely to fade in the public mind," he says, "whereas the war in Iraq is an ongoing problem." Bush's rating on six other areas didn't significantly change.

12. Well I know some of them
And I generally understand why they are supporting him (even if the reason is something as stupid as "he's a Republican.")

What I don't get are all of the people who sway with the wind... This guy is so polarizing that I don't understand how somebody can say they approve of him one week and then disapprove the week after.

21. It is because of all the bombing of Lebanon

It may not be a point of view that lots of people on DU have but if you notice whenever CNN shows a lot of military operations and bombings his ratings will go up because what a lot of people want to see is progress and action happening in the war on terror.

And they are not the ones reading or paying attention to all those Hezbollah won articles, all they are looking at are about the bombings and how many people we killed or Israel killed because to them that is good news about the war so they think well Bush is doing a good job and getting rid of more terrorists.

23. Operation Poll Vault is up and running.
Well, duh--the closer it gets to November 7, the closer it will get to 50 per cent. Which will, of course, mean that all the congressional races are too close to call. Which will, of course, mean the Repubs will squeak out wins by recount-proof margins.

19. Gallup overpolls Repugs and it skews their poll results
GALLUP OVER-SAMPLES REPUBLICANS: In 2000, exit polls showed that Democratic turnout exceeded Republican turnout by four percentage points. In 1996, Democratic turnout was five percentage points greater. There were also more Democrats voting in 1992 and 1988. A study by the Pew Research Center found that party registration is about the same as in 2000. But Gallup's most recent survey of 1006 registered voters included 40 percent Republicans and 31 percent Democrats.

28. Bush's ratings are determined by 1 factor only
What is happening with gas. Gas prices have been stable (but high) for the past couple of months. People have very short-term memory and now 3/gallon seems normal. When prices start going up again (which they will), his ratings will go down.

World events, death, lies, corruption, none of that matters to the average American. All that matters is what happens to gas prices between each visit to the pump. When prices are rising, Bush gets the blame. The repubs know this and will do everything possible to supress prices until the election.

This is an outlier. CNN is just in a tizzy because Fox is kicking their ass in the ratings and they want to suck up to the whitemaleconservatives who watch Fox.

With the five year anniversary of 9/11, all the fear relived. The "I hear you, and the terra ist, will soon hear you" moment played over and over. This will remind a lot of people "why we went to war", and renew their resolve as bush likes to say. All though I think it will wear off by November. If the real truth were told bush's numbers would sink like a rock, but you will have to stay up late at night ie.. 1am on court tv, 9/11 commision is on, or read the last page of the paper to get the truth. Spread the word, we know better.

This is a telephone poll of only 1000 adults (margin of error + or - 3 percent)

If you look at the chart on the USA Today website, you'll see that Bush approval ratings have been on a downward trend since they hit an all-time high in September 2001.

http://www.usatoday.com/news/graphics/presidential_appr...

But of course - the Bush/Rove machine know that the so-called "War On Terror" is the only chance they have of holding onto both houses of Congress this November.

Poll: GOP up after terror arrests

Updated 8/22/2006 9:13 AM ET E-mail | Save | Print | Reprints & Permissions | Subscribe to stories like this
By Susan Page and David Jackson, USA TODAY

WASHINGTON The arrest of terror suspects in London has helped buoy President Bush to his highest approval rating in six months and dampen Democratic congressional prospects to their lowest in a year.

In a USA TODAY/Gallup Poll taken Friday through Sunday, support for an unnamed Democratic congressional candidate over a Republican one narrowed to 2 percentage points, 47%-45%, among registered voters. Over the past year, Democrats have led by wider margins that ranged up to 16 points.

POLL RESULTS: Bush approval chart | Complete results

Now 42% of Americans say they approve of the job Bush is doing as president, up 5 points since early this month. His approval rating on handling terrorism is 55%, the highest in more than a year.

The boost may prove to be temporary, but it was evidence of the continuing political power of terrorism.

59. Relax, the baseline level is unchanged,
and on further reflection, people will gradually realize that terrorism is more and more prevalent the longer the GOP is around to play their phony games instead of protect us.

Bush and his GOP are seen as liars, and that undermines any message they are trying to peddle, including "we can protect you."

Well, not all, but those whose opinion was swayed by our government's manipulation of the situation. I really have a hard time believing they are STILL getting results from playing the terror card. So what happens if an terror attack actually occurs? Will Bush's approval rating (and the GOP's) shoot up to 80%?? x(

You know what's ironic? We were TOLD the GOP's strategy for November is to use terror to get votes. It's not a secret.

60. C'mon, Gallup has a very mixed history of their polls from month to month
Highly unreliable but, unfortunately, also highly quotable and I guess readable in hotels. :) Watch him "unexpectedly" fall in the next one. The trouble with inaccurate polls is that when GOP steals elections, there are always polls to show the contest was closer than it really was. That's my main concern -- and it has to do with perception, not reality.

62. Poll: GOP up after 'Snakes on a Plane' opens
WASHINGTON The long-awaited opening of the fan-driven movie "Snakes on a Plane" has helped buoy President Bush to his highest approval rating in six months and dampen Democratic congressional prospects to their lowest in a year.

It's just as valid a premise!

75. How much has this to do with Lebanon?
Seems the sheeple bought the terrorist bomb plot story, but plenty of others out there also think
that Hezbollah took Lebanon into war with Israel. It seems to be partly "poor little Israel",
and partly "evil terrorists" - i.e. if they're Muslim, they're terrorists.

Rupert Murdoch is busy throwing sand in sheeple's eyes, like this little effort last week:

"Nicole Kidman and 83 of her Hollywood mates have denounced terrorism, 'cos it's like, really bad?

"In a move that has the international Muslim community quaking in its boots, the group of high-
profile luvvies has taken out a powerfully worded full-page advertisement the The Los Angeles Times
calling for an end to the slaughter of innocents by nasty men belonging to organisations starting
with H. Take that, you terrorist punks!"

Collectively, these people mightn't be able to muster half a brain between them, but they're
famous, and that's enough for some people. If that nice Mr Bush wants to give Israel enough time
to demolish a whole country, well fine, he's fighting terrorism, isn't he?

77. Sadly
I fully believe this fucking poll. After 2004, why do any of you trust American voters to ever do the right thing?

Fear tactics win, plain and simple.
