U.S. names spy operations 'manager' for Cuba, Venezuela

WASHINGTON (AFP) -- The United States has named a special "manager" for its intelligence operations against Cuba and Venezuela, in effect putting the two Latin American nations on a par with "axis of evil" states confronted on multiple levels by the administration of President George W. Bush.

North Korea and Iran are the only other countries that have been assigned so-called "mission managers," who supervise intelligence operations against them on what the office of national intelligence director called "a strategic level."

In a statement released Friday, the office of National Intelligence Director John Negroponte said the manager would be responsible "for integrating collection and analysis on Cuba and Venezuela across the intelligence community" and "ensuring the implementation of strategies" that have not been disclosed.

"Such efforts are critical today, as policymakers have increasingly focused on the challenges that Cuba and Venezuela pose to American foreign policy," the statement said. The director's office said the manager would also be asked to ensure "that policymakers have a full range of timely and accurate intelligence on which to base their decisions."..cont'd

This sounds ominous.

John Negroponte is busy.

Chavez: Venezuela Captured 4 U.S Spies

Much more discussion from this prior thread:

(AP) President Hugo Chavez said Friday that Venezuela has caught four people spying for the U.S. government and has turned them over to the Americans.
Speaking at a campaign rally, Chavez referred to the four after reading aloud a news report about the U.S. naming a "mission manager" for Cuba and Venezuela to oversee U.S. intelligence efforts for the two countries.

Chavez consistently accuses the U.S. of conspiring to oust him and often asserts the CIA is working to destabilize his government. Last year he ordered one U.S.-based missionary group out of Indian communities where they worked, accusing them of spying for the CIA.

Speaking to a sea of supporters, Chavez read the name of the official named by Negroponte to head the Cuba and Venezuela mission, 32-year intelligence veteran J. Patrick Maher, and laughed.

"They selected 'Jack the Ripper,'" Chavez said. "What a little problem this is."

"These are signs that the empire doesn't rest," Chavez said, referring to the U.S. "The plan to try to destabilize us has already begun."

He predicted the U.S. could try to discredit the results of Venezuela's Dec. 3 presidential election, in which Chavez is seeking another six-year term, or could try to provoke violent unrest around the time of the vote.

3. You've Got To Wonder Why
Why make your illegal policies and the implementer of said policies public?

It's way too weird.

4. Yes, in some ways Bushco has been very transparent and public
about intent......for instance it's announcement fingering the "Axis of Evil". But bullies often use this psychological attack in hope the threat will be enough to achieve the desired results.

And of course Bushco is ultra secretive too.

5. Just watch..
When Cuba busts up the rings of abettors who are helping the US gov by "ensuring the implementation of strategies" (strategies that have not been disclosed), there will be the usual crowd mewling that those busted were arrested for 'just trying to speak their minds against Castro'.

The spies and operatives of the U.S. government will be labeled "dissidents" by the corporate media, HRW will do a "report", and those obsessed with the demonization of Castro will post a link and scream, "See, he's murdered and imprisoned tens of thousands of dissidents!". :eyes:

8. Negroponte?
So we will replace the horrible and inhuman dictatorships in Cuba and Venezuela with democratic peace-loving military death squads?

I'm sure the civilians just can't wait.
