The bad blood between Conrad Black and U.S. prosecutors rose to a boil Wednesday, as lawyers for the deposed media baron accused the government of acting in a “shameful” manner and making “sarcastic accusations” that are simply not true.
Last week, U.S. Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald asked a Chicago court to increase Lord Black's $20-million (U.S.) bail and force his wife to reveal her financial statements under oath.
He insisted these remedies were necessary because Lord Black was “lying” about his true financial position.
Lord Black, who has seldom retreated from a verbal duel, struck back Wednesday in an aggressively worded court filing and suggested it was Mr. Fitzgerald and his legal team that has made false and incorrect statements surrounding the bail conditions. He also insisted that prosecutors have no right to pry into the financial dealings of his wife, Barbara Amiel-Black.
