'Israel Will Devastate Lebanon If Tel Aviv Attacked'
Israel will retaliate harshly against an attack on Tel Aviv and will destroy the entire infrastructure in Lebanon, according to a highly-positioned IDF officer quoted by Channel One's Mabat news program.

The IDF has restricted bombing attacks in Lebanon to the enforcing a land and sea embargo on Lebanon and to hitting Hizbullah terrorist homes, offices and weapons centers. In the bombings on Beirut, only about one per cent of the Lebanon capital's area has been attacked.

Israel warns of consequences of Tel Aviv attack-TV

JERUSALEM, Aug 3 (Reuters) - Israel will destroy Lebanon's infrastructure if Hizbollah fires rockets at Tel Aviv as Hizbollah chief Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah threatened on Thursday, a senior Israeli defence source told Channel One television.

"If Tel Aviv is attacked, Lebanese national infrastructure will be destroyed," the state-owned television station said, quoting a senior military source.

Nasrallah, in a taped television message, had said his guerrillas would fire rockets at Tel Aviv, if Israel attacked central Beirut.

32. So there you go.
Israel exclaims outright that if Hizballah attacks Tel-Aviv the entire LEbanese infrastructure will be destroyed. I wonder what would happen if the Lebanese threatened to break international humanitarian rights laws? Fucking POS hypocrites.

55. At some points, so it seems:
http://www.guardian.co.uk/worldlatest/story/0,,-5992081...

-In the first air raids on Beirut in almost a week, witnesses said at least four missiles hit the southern suburb of Dahieh, a Shiite Muslim area repeatedly shelled by Israel. Lebanese television said the attacks targeted a Hezbollah compound that includes a center for religious teaching. The compound already was damaged by earlier raids.

118. You beat me to it, Xultar. Bwahaha.
I didn't want to seem to be making light of the horror that Israel is inflicting on Lebanon, but I'll admit, my first reaction to the OP was to laugh.

That crafty Olmert is going to "destroy the entire infrastructure of Lebanon"? This whole Israeli operation has progressed past terror into absolute FARCE!

Another week of this disgusting display of "self-defense" and there wil be no reason for Hezbollah NOT to hit Tel Aviv. You reap what you sow.

and we have been screaming for a ceasefire while Bush, Blair, and Olmert oppose it.

It's decision time! Ceasefire or holocaust? Insanity or reason?

We better let our political leaders know that we are about to lose the entire enchilada unless someone stops this carnage.

23. let's be fair here
Israel claims it's the fault of the Lebanese for tolerating Hezbollah, therefore they're legit targets (i.e. anyone left after leafletting is implicit a Hezbollah supporter). So, the Lebanese can claim any Israeli is a legit target for tolerating and voting for the war mongers leveling Lebanon.

I think a large portion of the Middle East population, Jew, Muslim, Christian, whomever, would not know what to do with themselves if peace and diplomacy broke out in the region.

...and don't support it.

You can't make a comment like that without realizing it must be applied to us, here, or you're setting up a double standard.

I don't think even those Israelis blinded by nationalism or fearful enough to vote for the rightwing Israeli government should die for that, any more than I think the Lebanese should die for their accepting Hezbollah charity.

The deaths should stop on all sides, because it's accomplishing absolutely nothing worthwhile.

and between IRAQ and IRAN and Saudi Arabia... that's most of it--and Saudi is way past it's prime. And if we let IRAQ fall to pieces and we walk out on them... Ahmedinehjhad will make them Western IRAN in a heartbeat. IRAN has been behind most of our greatest problems in the world, at least in the middle east and with them controlling the world's remaining oil supplies...

We can't leave IRAQ. Does anybody realize this? Am I insane?

52. Do you honestly think the Iranian government is suicidal?
If you believe such a nonsensical bit of irrationality, our conversation can't continue until you realize that, like all rulers, they want to live out long full lives fat and happy.

With that, it should be apparent that their nuking Israel would be signing their death warrant. Knowing the usual trend of theocrats historically being as tied to material comfort and wealth as they are to their religious ideals (see Popes during the Crusades, for example), I think it's safe to conclude the Iranian government isn't ready to leave this planet.

With the world's most eminent scientists, incredible amounts of money, fantastic amounts of electricity, etc. It is not a good comparison.

On the other hand, the design of a nuclear weapon is quite well known now, so it might not take Iran all that long. For all we know, Pakistan has already "lent them" a bomb or two. Invading Iran would be a gamble in all sorts of ways.

102. And...
They already have nuclear reactors, and modern technology is off-the-shelf available these days including high explosives and compact detonators and microelectronics. The "bomb" just isn't that hard for a nation-state to pull off (and who's to say they don't have connections with Pakistan for the right $$$).

So too, they already have modest missile technology, if they can buy some guidance technology, plans or expertise, add another five years and... ouch (even before that, regionally, ouch).

104. They don't have reactors to make plutonium
So they would have to use a uranium core. Enriching uranium is time consuming, and very technical, involving lots of finicky centrifuges. But all things are possible if a population is sufficiently well educated, motivated, and has the resources.

I don't doubt Iran will eventually get a bomb. I don't worry about it much - plenty of countries have the bomb and we are still here. I don't agree with the "mad Iranians will commit national suicide to get rid of the Jews" theory. I grew up hearing "mad Red Chinese will nuke us all to get rid of capitalism", same for "mad Russians". Then it was "crazy Indians who don't care about death because they believe in reincarnation", etc.

People will just have to learn to get along, because nuclear weapons are bound to continue proliferating. Bush guaranteed that when he invaded Iraq.

what iran has. You know what Hezbohlah has. You know what Syria has

Its too bad Israel doesn't know this... because Israel is paranoid about this

Everybody knows what israel has...:nukes:and lots of them but the joke is if they nuke they will feel the consequences as well as Iran feels the consequences

The Dalai Llama spoke true wisdom when he said Globilization is knowing that what happens in one country effects the whole world and us... Nukes are not the answer I hope that little fact is figured out but evidentally its not...It is a fact... no war will be won by nuclear bombs ...

You all bring up excellent points if they nuke everybody is devastated... I just worry about dealing logically with people who strap on bombs and die for 41 virgins...

I hope Israel knows what its doing??? I personally don't agree with it but I understand the sick psychology here of paranoia

and what hangs over the israeli people is passively walking into furnaces... THAT WILL NEVER HAPPEN EVER AGAIN... Israel is not Pro passive its Pro active...

If they die they'll die fighting

86. "dealing logically with people who strap on bombs and die for 41 virgins"
You've bought the whole line.

Do some research on the motivation of suicide bombers. While some are religious fanatics, in general the suicide bomber is not a religious fanatic. Instead it seems that suicide attacks are most likely used by people living under a military occupation where they have no other means available to strike effectively against the occupying nation. Rather than irrational fanaticism the suicide bomber is acting out of a rational desperation in the only way that he or she sees as effective.

"The Strategic Logic of Suicide Terrorism
ROBERT A. PAPE The University of Chicago
Suicide terrorism is rising around the world, but the most common explanations do not help us
understand why. Religious fanaticism does not explain why the world leader in suicide terrorism is
the Tamil Tigers in Sri Lanka, a group that adheres to a Marxist/Leninist ideology, while existing
psychological explanations have been contradicted by the widening range of socio-economic backgrounds
of suicide terrorists. To advance our understanding of this growing phenomenon, this study collects the
universe of suicide terrorist attacks worldwide from 1980 to 2001, 187 in all. In contrast to the existing
explanations, this study shows that suicide terrorism follows a strategic logic, one specifically designed
to coerce modern liberal democracies to make significant territorial concessions. Moreover, over the past
two decades, suicide terrorism has been rising largely because terrorists have learned that it pays. Suicide
terrorists sought to compel American and French military forces to abandon Lebanon in 1983, Israeli
forces to leave Lebanon in 1985, Israeli forces to quit the Gaza Strip and the West Bank in 1994 and
1995, the Sri Lankan government to create an independent Tamil state from 1990 on, and the Turkish
government to grant autonomy to the Kurds in the late 1990s. In all but the case of Turkey, the terrorist
political cause made more gains after the resort to suicide operations than it had before. Thus, Western
democracies should pursue policies that teach terrorists that the lesson of the 1980s and 1990s no longer
holds, policies which in practice may have more to do with improving homeland security than with
offensive military action."

95. Suicide Bombers "rational desperation"
I agree their people who feel DESPERATE without HOPE ... the only power they have over their life is the ability to choose when they die...

But make no mistake its REVENGE, ANGER, and no respect for human life act also. They definitely believe they will be a hero...its their way of going out in a blaze of glory... Its a act of a warrior...
Self Sacrifice ...

This is one very sad person which means a very dangerous person also...

would you agree that maybe in their sick mind this may look like a logical reason

but lets face it

very sad civilization we live in...

"Moreover, the ordinary citizen is asking himself another question: If several thousand guerrilla fighters do constitute an existential danger to a country with a strike force and weaponry that are unparalleled in this part of the world, how is it that during the past five or six years we heard nothing to that effect from government leaders?"

Israel is certainly in no threat of being destroyed. Its Lebanon whos fighting for its life now. The Israeli government has vowed to level the infrstructure in Lebanon should Hizballah attack Tel-Aviv. So I would say thery are the ones in danger.

78. all this "Israel fighting for its life..." BS...
...is just the latest escalation of paranoid rhetoric from the Likud/Kadima media echo-chamber; Olmert blundered into a one-sided "war" that has so far proven to be an unmitigated disaster for Israel (militarily, financially, politically AND diplomaticly)...vague,undefined, changing-every-day goals; no contingency planning; absolutely no discussion regarding possible consequences (any of this sound familiar?); etc...and pro-war, pro-government talking heads ratcheting up the polemical looniness with each frustration and set-back. Israel has the world's fourth largest army, complete with a navy, an air force, heavy artillery, main battle tanks, cruise missiles and fully-motorized divisions with several hundred thousand soldiers (regular army and reserves). Hezbollah has (according to the IDF) about 2,000 soldiers (of whom the IDF claims to have killed, uh, 2,000); they are primarily armed with automatic rifles, a few medium machine guns, RPG's, and light (unguided) rockets...no planes/attack helicopters, no tanks, no heavy artillery, no cruise missiles, no mechanized units...how anyone in their right (as distinct from Far Right) mind can conflate this home-defense force into a threat serious enough to threaten Israel's very existance is beyond me. If "lovuian" knows how this is possible, i'm ready to hear it. Israel isn't fighting for its "life"; it's fighting for its embarrassed pride, and nothing more...well, okay, maybe for the water and more "elbow room".

Hey I said that I think this is a stupid idea but what I meant is israel really believes its fighting for its life here...

these people were tremendously scarred psychologically by WWII

I just feel that Bush is using this fear and Israel is making bad choices... but I do understand the fear these people feel ... Its the same fear instilled by BUSh of WMD in Iraq...

Iran is using FEAR
ISRAEL is using fear

Edited on Thu Aug-03-06 04:43 PM by theanarch
...provide: i can't imagine ordinary Israeli's believing this nonsense--they've been through these drills (and much worse) before, and just keep on suriving, expanding, planting new settlements on more occupied land, etc., etc. This is just the propoganda an increasingly desparate regime is feeding the people through the mostly pro-government, pro-war media...no different from the "they hate U.S. for our freedoms/if we don't fight them there..." scare-rhetoric that's shoved down our throats by our mostly pro-government, pro-war M$M.

As for those "scarred psychologically by WWII", i hate to be the one to break the news to you, but WWII ended 61 years ago, and that generation is dying off (same as our "greatest generation"). The typical Israeli of today is the grandchild of the founding generation, and has known nothing but military success (until recently) and relative prosperity all their lives. And while they have to live with the underlying anxiety of unguided rocket attacks and the occasional suicide bomber, their fears of being the victim of someone else's violence is pretty insignificant compared to the same fears that Palestinians and Lebanese have of being victims of Israel's violence.

And: Israel and Iran are both using the propoganda of hate, fear, ignorence and religious self-righteousness; and everyone's trying to manipulate everyone else...some with better success than others, and mostly through no effort of their own.

If Israel was a child, it would be a spoilt brat, a fat greedy slug
of a bully - the son of privileged parents who will not hear a harsh
word about their offspring's behaviour but who will lie themselves
blue in the face to defend his name, bribing and threatening the
accusers in turn.

Sometimes the victims fight back. That day is fast arriving.

56. Hezbollah leader offers ceasefire, but threatens Tel Aviv
Hezbollah leader Sheik Hassan Nasrallah said his militant group will stop firing rockets on Israeli cities if Israel stops its attacks on Lebanese towns.

"You attack our cities, villages, civilians and our capital, we will react," he said in a televised speech. "Anytime you decide to stop your campaign against our cities, villages, civilians and infrastructure, we will not fire rockets on any Israeli settlement or city."

But he also threatened to fire rockets at Tel Aviv if central Beirut is attacked. Israeli warplanes have hit Hezbollah strongholds in southern Beirut suburbs repeatedly.

"If you strike Beirut, the Islamic Resistance will strike Tel Aviv and it is able to do so," Nasrallah said.

48 hours to leave their homes, and then bomb away.

Or perhaps we should support Kucinich and others proposal for an immediate cease-fire, even if israel has not had a chance to "win", even if it will not make the warlords of Israel happy. I support this alternative.
