pResident B*ush to visit [my town] today
President Bush to visit today
August 03,2006
Kaitlin Bell
Monitor Staff Writer

McALLEN Area law enforcement agencies will shift into high gear to provide security for one of the most important men on earth as soon as Air Force Ones wheels kiss the ground at McAllen Miller International Airport about 1:45 this afternoon.

"Presidential visits are the ultimate," said McAllen Police Chief Victor Rodriguez of President Bushs first visit to the Rio Grande Valley during his presidency. "Theres no other type of V.I.P. visit that comes close to a presidential visit."

The U.S. Secret Service is spearheading the security effort surrounding Bushs speech in which he will outline his five-point immigration plan at Anzalduas County Park in Mission, but local officers are a crucial part of the plan.

(snip)

The presidents route from the airport to Anzadulas Park has not been finalized. Or maybe it has, and the Secret Service is not letting the locals in on the exact details until right before the president arrives, said the sheriff.

I didn't know about this till today, and I'm stuck at home, unable to protest! :grr: :banghead:

On a related note, the "secret route" thing is a tempest in a teapot, really, as there's only one direct route between the airport and the park that doesn't involve going out of the way to the expressway or through dense neighborhoods. So if anyone from McAllen/Mission is reading, protest on Business Hwy (US) 83!

5. Not every town they visit implements Free Speech Zones
Cheney came to my town a few years ago and they allowed us to stand along the road where his motorcade was going to pass. I got to look Cheney straight in the eye while I jumped up and down flipping him a bird. It was great!

7. Vice President, maybe
Bush went to my town, the nearest protest was my town's courthouse. A good 20 min walk, and not even the motorcade passed there.

6. Easy, Chief
Did McAllen Police Chief Victor Rodriguez have to change his underwear after issuing that quote? You can practically hear the squishing when you read it.
