Speaker Hastert touts Taylor’s veteran background

Wednesday, August 02, 2006
By Fred Afflerbach

Tribune-Herald staff writer

U.S. House Speaker J. Dennis Hastert, stumping Tuesday in a congressional district that includes President Bushs ranch, said GOP congressional candidate Van Taylors experience as an Iraq War veteran qualified him to best represent Texas 17th district.

Stopping at Taylors Waco campaign headquarters, Hastert said Taylors background would help keep the Waco Veterans Affairs hospital open.

Van Taylor is a veteran that understands what a vet needs, Hastert said after a fundraiser that campaign officials said drew about 100 people.

Hastert also blasted Taylors opponent, U.S. Rep. Chet Edwards, D-Waco, for not representing his constituents in Washington, D.C., and giving them lip service when in the district.

Hastert Stumps For GOP Candidate Van Taylor

(August 2, 2006)--Among the dozen or so congressional seats Republicans hope to pick up this fall is the Central Texas district that includes President Bush's Crawford ranch.

So says US House Speaker Dennis Hastert who was in Waco Tuesday to campaign for Republican businessman Van Taylor, who's challenging eight-term 17th District Democratic incumbent Chet Edwards.

Hastert says Taylor would make "a great addition" to Congress because he's an Iraq war veteran who understands sacrifices and family values.

Hastert spoke at a private fundraiser for Taylor in Waco that drew about 100 supporters.

Hastert says he's "playing offense" by campaigning in 42 districts nationwide throughout August.

He says Republicans are targeting Democratic districts in Georgia, South Carolina, Vermont,West Virginia, Ohio, Illinois, Iowa and Washington.

2. He looks as if he should be wearing a straight jacket!
He's lost just a tiny bit of his pResidential bearing Karen Hughes was bellowing about during his campaign in 2000.

7. Note How Few Of The Big Donors Are From 17th District
Note how few of the donors for Republican candidate Taylor are from the 17th congressional district. Within the Dallas-area zip codes, I noticed donations from downtown Dallas, Preston Hollow, and Highland Park--and I doubt that any of these are in Chet Edwards' district--even after Tom DeLay's jerrymandering!

8. The Park Cities has certainly sheltered its share of wackos.
IIRC that's where Dickhead Cheney was actually living in 2000 -- while pretending to be a Wyoming resident ...
