Scientist publishes 'escape route' from global warming

A Nobel Prize-winning scientist has drawn up an emergency plan to save the world from global warming, by altering the chemical makeup of Earth's upper atmosphere. Professor Paul Crutzen, who won a Nobel Prize in 1995 for his work on the hole in the ozone layer, believes that political attempts to limit man-made greenhouse gases are so pitiful that a radical contingency plan is needed.

In a polemical scientific essay to be published in the August issue of the journal Climate Change, he says that an "escape route" is needed if global warming begins to run out of control.

Professor Crutzen has proposed a method of artificially cooling the global climate by releasing particles of sulphur in the upper atmosphere, which would reflect sunlight and heat back into space. The controversial proposal is being taken seriously by scientists because Professor Crutzen has a proven track record in atmospheric research.

A fleet of high-altitude balloons could be used to scatter the sulphur high overhead, or it could even be fired into the atmosphere using heavy artillery shells, said Professor Crutzen, a researcher at the Max Planck Institute for Chemistry in Germany.

just pointed it out. As for LBN which is not supposed to be more than 12 hours old- if you go into our Independant site it shows the time you went in - not the time a news item was listed. Check it now if you like.

July 31st is the date of today's The Independant newspaper. That paper was printed last night probably no later than 9pm and was then loaded onto lorries etc for nationwide distribution ready for shops to sell this morning from about 7am onward. I had a lot of friends in the various print unions and so know the timings. I appreciate you may not have understood this and hence mis-judged the true age of that "news".

Nope - I'd simply responded to the original post in General Discussion and didn't see the point in a duplicate. The article in The Independant makes it clear that it is an extract from the August edition of Climate Change and that periodical was probably being composed weeks ago - most August editions are on the newstands late July. The Independant reporter would not have been allowed to use yesterdays date in today's newpaper edition - hence 31st July.

I didn't make the original point that it was a dupe posting for your benefit - it was for other to be able to see all comments. Nothing more than that so no need to take the matter personally.
