Yahoo AP: Plains, Midwest anticipate heat wave
Edited on Mon Jul-31-06 07:31 AM by The Anti-Neo Con

By JIM IRWIN, Associated Press Writer 1 hour, 9 minutes ago

DETROIT - Scorching heat again built up over the Plains and Upper Midwest early Monday as the furnace-like air that blistered California last week settled over the nation's midsection.

Numerous heat warnings were in place from Michigan to Oklahoma, with high temperatures expected to climb into the 90s or 100s, and sparking thunderstorms along its eastern edge.

The heat wave was keeping thousands huddled in their air-conditioned homes as many poor and homeless people sweat it out or head for cooling centers.

The combination of temperatures in the mid to upper 90s and high humidity threatened to make it feel like 100 degrees to 105 degrees in the Lower Peninsula.

Old news, but expect more of the same...

4. Same here in Kansas.
Been very hot and very dry for quite some time. I am a little worried, my grass is crispy and my crop was small. So far we don't have large bare earth with cracks in it but it won't be long.

30. Its hot and humid up here in Michigan.
It's only hitting the mid nineties, but the humidity is unbearable. It was nice yesterday when we had a 10 minute storm and it felt 20 degrees cooler outside. As soon as it stopped raining the temperature jumped back up where it was and the humidity was worse.

34. That is how it usually is here
but it has been very dry this last week, humidity is only 34% right now.

I hate when that happens, it feels so good but as soon as the sun peeks out you just steam. Good luck with that. I have a good friend who teaches all summer in Michigan at a music camp. He always teases me about the lovely weather. Guess not so much this year.

I'm from Minnesota and am watching for the rain they say will come tomorrow. But for many farmers here, it will be too late.

36. Pierre and Mobridge topping 110
I saw yesterday that Pierre's high was 110 and Mobrigde's high was 112. At least the humidity was lower than it was here in the Cities, but still... holy shit! The hottest spots in the counry was in SOUTH DAKOTA?!?!?!? Land of snow and Sturgis?

What global warming?

BTW, high today in Minneapolis/Saint Paul: 101°. A few months ago it was as low as -28°. And we like it 'cuz it keeps the state from getting crowded! :-)

22. They keep saying we have chances of rain - but it never amounts
to much once it gets here. A few isolated thunder showers or a few sprinkles is all.

Maybe we could have a giant DU Rain Dance. Would be a fun way to get togehter.

17. Rush will spin this
with the reference to the 1980 heatwave. I guess that is all well & good but when we have had a record heat for the 1st six months of the year then a summer like this is only going to blow those record books away. It seems like every year global warming seems to bring a new disaster. The last 2 years it was hurricanes. This year it is heat waves & floods.

I am getting bored with staying inside - just too hot to go outside.

I think our temperatures are supposed to break on Wednesday - back down into the 80's for about a day and then it looks like it will heat right back up again.

11. Here in St. Louis they say
we haven't had a summer this hot since 1980.

I was only 4 in 1980, so I don't remember, but my parents say that summer was legendary b/c of it's heat. They & other people say that it was around 100* practically everyday during June, July, and August.

19. Your parents and others are correct
I was nineteen in 1980, and it was a hellishly warm summer. Open the door outside, and it was like opening the door to a blast furnace. The heat would hit you so hard that it almost felt like a punch in the gut. And it went on and on, yes, June, July, and August.

July gave us a good taste of that, and it looks like August is shaping up to do so as well. I live over in the Columbia area, and we had 103 yesterday, looking at 104 today. Insane.

Stay cool and stay hydrated. Don't forget if you're out for a long time to not just drink water, but also Gatorade or some such, for both the salt and electrolytes you need.

35. That was a very bad summer.
I did not have air conditioning in my apartment or my car, I was 26. I would lay in my bathtub full of cool water at night then sleep outside on the little deck I had. I remember one week in August when the temps were in the 100-teens for several days in a row.

This is not even as bad as it was 3 years ago in August. I clocked a bunch of 107 degrees at the farm that year. It is tough working outside in this but I prefer it to working outside in the winter.

12. Actually we've had a lot of hot summers - I remember
lots of years like this. The grass burns up and it stays hot and dry.

I actually lived thru the summer of 1980 with no air conditioning. I think we had 17 straight days over a hundred ( and they were like 106 and 107) and I thought I was going to die. It was 101 at midnight then. I would spray my bed with water to take the heat out of it. I had to wrap my animals in wet towels to keep them for over heating. It was just awful.

Course, it also makes it feel like you are walking out into a blast furnace.

37. Triple-digit temperatures forecast across U.S.
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/14117740/

Scorching heat again built up over the Plains and Upper Midwest early Monday as the furnace-like air that blistered California last week settled over the nation’s midsection.

The combination of temperatures in the mid to upper 90s and high humidity threatened to make it feel like 100 degrees to 105 degrees in lower Michigan.

In western Upper Michigan, highs ranging from 97 to 102 degrees combining with high humidity could make it feel as hot as 110 degrees to unprotected skin, forecasters said.

I guess that heat outside is also an article of religious faith?
