Airstrikes resume after Rice moves on
~snip~
Peter Wilson, Beirut
27jul06

HUGE plumes of smoke and dust rose from the southern suburbs of Beirut again yesterday as Israeli warplanes resumed bombing after holding fire for just over a day because of the visit of US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.

Any hope that the lull in bombing was more than a temporary nicety for the benefit of Dr Rice ended when a series of large bombs were dropped on the southern district in mid-afternoon, sending shudders through much of the city.

Shops and businesses in the rest of this battle-hardened capital had started to reopen cautiously in recent days and the renewed bombing of Hezbollah's stronghold in the southern suburbs sent thousands of Beirut's residents and workers to windows to look into the sky for the Israeli warplanes.

Most of the bombing has been restricted to the Haret Hreik area, just 4km from the parliament and Beirut's shiny downtown district, and a five-minute drive from the government buildings where Dr Rice met Lebanese officials on Monday.

9. Thursday after Katrina
Bush finally sent some National Guard troops into town with water and food, just as he landed in twin helicopters in Mississippi. He made a big speech with two copters behind him and a full military escort beside him. At the same time, National Guard troops were driving through the flooded streets, on camera, handing out water and food. Bush gave a speech about how much help he was bringing, how many Guardsmen and supplies were on there way, what all he was going to do for the Coast, then got back in his helicopter and flew away, taking the troops with him. The Guardsmen pulled back, the supplies vanished, and none of the promised troops showed up until Saturday.

All a nice photo op to get the media off his back for doing nothing. When it was over, he left, and the people dying in the hospitals continued to die, and the people thirsting in the streets continued to thirst, and none of Bush's posturing amounted to anything.

6. as we used to say about a particularly useless manager where I once worked
...she came into town, left a large steaming pile of particularly noxious sh*t, and then moved on.....

Leaving us to clean it up.

Wasn't always a she.

There are just some people who are in jobs they just do not know how to do. Therefore, they just sh*t all over everybody and expect them to clean up.

The sad fact is that we do clean up - we have to, to keep our jobs.

It is pathetic. It is also America.

I don't believe in 'love it or leave it', but it is getting damn hard to be an American - I'm probably going to have to quit being a liberal (who bitches), and become a radical (who does something about it).

I'll have to wait until my kids are grown first....

12. well, we certainly don't want these war mongering whores
of the bush cabal exposed to some front line action. If they were, they might actually understand the plight of the innocents caught in the middle.
