G.O.P. Worries Face From Past Will Haunt Florida Senate Race
By ABBY GOODNOUGH

MIAMI, Nov. 25 — It would seem that the last thing President Bush needs as he seeks re-election next year is anything that reopens the profound wounds from the Florida presidential recount of 2000.

So it is little wonder that when Representative Katherine Harris, who became the globally known face of the recount as Florida's secretary of state, expressed interest in running for the Senate in 2004, Mr. Bush's advisers shuddered, Republicans say.

The image of Ms. Harris campaigning alongside Mr. Bush in Florida next fall, stirring up partisan memories and potentially driving Florida Democrats to the polls in record numbers, was one of the biggest factors the party considered as it reacted to the surprising news that Senator Bob Graham would not seek re-election, several Republicans in Washington and Florida said.

3. They SHOULD be worried
Cruella became the personification of the theft of the election and if hse runs, Democrats in general and especially minorities will turn out in droves to defeat her.

4. This is interesting…
Governor Bush has said little publicly about Ms. Harris's potential candidacy, but his relationship with her is cool at best, many Republicans say, and as chairman of his brother's re-election campaign here, he would not want her to run.

Asked on Tuesday about a Harris candidacy, he said, "If she wants to get in, she'll have to earn it."

How could he be cool to the woman responsible for putting his brother in office?

5. They hate Harris
Ironic, but true: she's grown too big for her britches in the Bush family's view.

6. Revisiting the stolen election might bring more to understand...
what really happened in Florida in 2000. Aside from Harris's being a lightning rod, is it possible that Rove & Co. fear that her candidacy might spur some of the press to actually report the truth?

7. Well she's............
emminently qualified, she has what, almost a year of service in the House under her belt? This dried up shrew is reaching too far too fast. She'd get murdered in any Senate race, I can't see her running. Even she's not THAT stupid.

8. I do hope she gets the nomination
Betty Caster or any other Democratic nominee could take her or Bill McCullum. I worry about genial, moderate HUD Secretary Mel Martinez getting the Republican nomination. He would be much harder to beat.

9. I wonder... Al Gore could run the Democrats' Florida campaigns in 2004
Edited on Wed Nov-26-03 07:09 AM by 0rganism
If he took about 6 months to travel around the state, campaigning for various Democrats, perhaps the Dems could regroup in Florida. As is, I think it's going to take a lot more than one lousy Senate candidate to expose GOP's corruption and remove them from dominance. But working together, Gore and Graham could do a lot.

10. Hmmm.
I just posted this in the politics forum, didn't see it here. I find this story odd. Could it be an attempt to make harris appear not to be the regime hack that we know she is? Also, this is the first I've read that martinez is not running. Now that is pretty good news.

11. She is like Cheney
She knows where all the bodies are buried. How are they going to get rid of her? The subordinate becomes the master.
