Israeli ground troops have entered southern Lebanon to attack Hezbollah bases on the border, a government spokesman said Monday. Israel's six-day-old offensive against Hezbollah following the capture of two Israeli soldiers earlier had been an aerial campaign.

4. Some guesses

There appears to one main road that runs north/south in Lebanon, it runs down the coast and israel appears to have pasted it. That should take care of the movement of Lebanese re-inforcements.

The Latani river (east/west running) seems to be good place to stop in southern Lebanon for the israelis.

JERUSALEM — Israeli ground troops entered southern Lebanon to attack Hezbollah bases on the border, but they rapidly returned to Israel after conducting their military operations, officials said Monday.

Israel's six-day-old offensive against Hezbollah following the capture of two Israeli soldiers has been primarily an aerial campaign, but government spokesman, Asaf Shariv, said the Israeli army chief of staff confirmed that ground troops had gone into Lebanon, if only briefly.

A military official, insisting on anonymity, said a small group of Israeli troops had crossed into Lebanon overnight to attack a Hezbollah position but then returned to Israel.

“There was a small operation in a very limited area overnight,” the official said. “That is over.”

Israel has been reluctant to send ground troops into southern Lebanon, an area that officials say has been heavily mined by Hezbollah and could lead to many Israeli casualties.

Israel would also want to quickly withdraw from the area, rather than get involved in a prolonged conflict like its 18-year occupation of southern Lebanon that ended in May, 2000. The bloody nature of the fighting at the that time and the high number of casualties finally forced the government to cave into public pressure to withdraw from southern Lebanon and end the contentious occupation.

7. I'm Of The Same Opinion

bombing is not going to win this one, unless they are very targeted strikes at Hezbollah missile bases. And even then, many of these terrorists do not shy from using human shields, it would be just like them to have the missiles stored next to a hospital.

I hate the idea of ground forces, it seems like Israel's own Vietnam or Iraq, but I hate the idea of indiscriminate bombing even more. This war should be against Hezbollah, not Lebanon.

against them, tactics which have been honed and perfected by insurgents in Iraq. Thanks go to Bush for allowing islamic guerillas to develop means of fighting an army just like the U.S., the Israeli army. Any ground war in Lebanon will not be like their earlier invasion. Now they will massacre from the air.
