| Katherine Harris to enter hospital next week |
|
Tampa, Florida - Congresswoman Katherine Harris will visit Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C. on Monday, July 10th to undergo pre-operative testing to remove an ovarian mass. The preventative surgery is scheduled for July 17th at Walter Reed. Harris' doctor, Dr. John Eisold, attending physician to Congress said Harris' condition is low-risk for malignancy. The mass will be removed by the use of a minimally invasive laparoscopic surgical procedure. A biopsy will be performed following the surgery to establish if the mass is malignant or benign, and will determine the course for any subsequent treatment. more… http://www.tampabays10.com/news/local/article.aspx?stor...

My mother had a growth the size of a pen-point in one of her breasts and they surgically removed it. It wasn't cancerous or anything, but they didn't want to take any chances.
When cysts grow on the ovaries or in the breast, doctors will want to remove it no matter how big or small. They don't take chances with cancer anymore.

and is one of them. They just dumped her back onto that sewer called 'Earth' when they found ice in her veins and that she just might reverse global warming. That little 'mass' they're going to remove - they'll likely discover it's her petrified heart so there'll be no need for a cardio check up. She obviously runs on 'Factor'-Max.

but I am surprised about cancer surgery being performed as a laparoscopic surgical procedure, I always thought that during the operation the surgeon would have the tumor examined to make sure that he had gotten it all (they have a small lab which is next to the operating room) and if not to remove the remainder. Laparoscopic is done through your belly button, which would make it hard to go back and remove it all.

when my sister had to have a biopsy done, I got a fact book on cancer, different cancers have different survival rates, ovarian is one of the more difficult to treat, I would go with the more aggressive treatment for ovarian cancer if it was me.

Edited on Sat Jul-08-06 04:35 PM by MissWaverly
I had to have my gall bladder removed and when the surgeon saw my scar, he said "you didn't say you had major surgery." I said that was from minor surgery 20 years ago and everyone laughed. Sorry to hear about your loss...she sounds like a nice woman who took care of her health; what a sad thing.

Harris has certainly had a major do-over, like Paula Jones. Is that the way Republicans repay their not so gorgeous female accomplices for their services?

it's not unusual they'd do this laproscopically rather than opening up her abdomen. Less risk of complication and infection that way. Standard OP most likely, rather than Ms. Harris' vanity. Sorry.

I have four from my lap this spring--one in my belly button that's almost invisible (the resident did a beautiful job on that one), one a few inches over from that, and two down lower on each side of my pelvis. They thought they were going to have to take out my right ovary but didn't have to--I had the fourth incision so they could get the camera in a different angle to make sure it really was all just my appendix.

I was taken directly to the hospital for surgery after the laporoscopic procedure at the out patient facility. Wasn't even awake for the trip across town.

A good lap surgeon can do wonders. I had a lap this spring, and while it took longer to fully recover than they'd said, it went really well. They thought they would have to take my ovary and a lot of endometriosis out, and it turned out to be my appendix and two large nasty spots of chronic inflammation. They did that all with lap, which more and more surgeries are being done as--better for the patient, better for the surgeon.

The point is to be better than them. I hope the surgery works out for her, and that the mass is benign.
Of course, I also hope she'll be beaten to within an inch of her life, metaphorically speaking, in November.

|
... laparoscopic surgery to look for ovarian tumors is not done through the belly button. It is done with two small incisions on each side of the abdomen.
My doctor attempted to ease my apprehension by claiming he thought that the mass he saw on the ultrasound was just an ovarian cyst -- but he took the precaution of having an oncological surgeon in the operating room with him (not that I knew about that!). And yes, there's a lab next door to examine the removed tissue, which in my case turned out to be cancer -- at which point the surgeon went whole hog with the slicing and dicing.
I'm doing fine, by the way and the only ill will I have for Harris is to have a humiliating defeat at the polls.

I hope you continue to do well. I wouldn't wish ovarian cancer on my worst enemy--how awful that one is.
I had an incision through my belly button this spring for my abdominal thing. We thought I would lose my right ovary, and it turned out to be a bad appendix. I wish yours had been that simple.

this doesn't sound like a lot of confidence in her home state doctors and hospitals. Wouldn't you want to be "home" for such a procedure and recovery time?
I bet we'll be seeing her with some wounded troops saying "I know how they feel now".

There's a play called GREATER TUNA and a line in the play is "you're talkin' about my brain", said with a very thick southern accent. You should watch it if you get the chance, it's VERY funny.

They've been done fairly recently.
Maybe this is her chance to exit the race gracefully, since her poll numbers are in the dumper anyway. Wouldn't put it past her handlers to try to get her out of the mess she's in.
