'NY Post' Cites Evidence That Ann Coulter Plagiarized Parts of Book, Columns

NEW YORK Well, Ann Coulter may be "liberal" in one respect, anyway. The New York Post reported Sunday that author/columnist Coulter "cribbed liberally in her latest book" and also in several of her syndicated columns, according to a plagiarism expert.

John Barrie, creator of the iThenticate plagiarism-probing system, claimed he found at least three examples of what he called "textbook plagiarism" in the new Coulter book "Godless" after he ran its text through the program.

He also discovered verbatim copying in Coulter's weekly column, which is syndicated to more than 100 newspapers by Universal.

The headline in classic Post fashion: COPYCATTY COULTER PILFERS PROSE: PRO

After detailing some of the alleged plagiarism in the book, the article related that Barrie also ran Coulter's columns from the past year through iThenticate "and found similar patterns of cribbing.

19. It was a silly play on words "liberal" politcally, and "liberally"
do not necessarily mean the same thing. The world is truly going to hell in a handbasket if people are going to be offended by a badly written pun.

27. but do you think
that the thousands who read trash like the post will make a distinction?

huh?

i think not.

so, once again, the word "liberal", or an derivation, is the culprit.

the new york post will do absolutely NOTHING that could in ANY way endorse anything progressive/liberal/democratic.

if it does, it in some way helps promote murdoch's fascist agenda.

See Arthur Coltrane, no matter how much you want to be a conservative woman, the party you support hates gays so much that they'll never accept you. Something condoleza and blackwell will eventually figure out. So the post gets him first. Cool, but dang.

As much as I like to see conservatives eat their own I really believe the NY times deserved first crack.

18. She should apologize
Molly Ivins at least had the good grace to admit and apologize when her plagiarisms were pointed out. Coulter should do the same.

20. Molly Ivins did "appropriate" a couple of jokes....
For which she apologized. She was not the first to describe Arnold Schwarzenegger as "a condom stuffed with walnuts."

But she has not lifted large chunks of other people's works. However, the Right Wingers love to use her as an example when one of their own is accused of plagiarism.

25. which is precisely my point
Ivins apologized for what was basically inconsequential borrowing of jokes and phrases, and she took her lumps in public. But does anybody really think Coulter will do the same for something more egregious?

15. This is a surprise?
Even, Coulter would occasionally have to run out of venom and need to "borrow" from others. Jeepers, after all there is a limit to just how much hate even she could muster (and she seems to be the Queen of Hate).

16. Coulter's new campaign??? Proving textual borrowing is praiseworthy.
Edited on Mon Jul-03-06 06:04 AM by skip fox
What do you bet she says it's not only "no big deal," but that the public is getting more for their money when she borrows without acknowledgment. Besides, it's only noxious liberal academics who worry about such minor matters, which they use (of course) to keep conservatives (who are not so meagerly concerned) out of the tax-payers' universities.

(I'm a prof., but I know how unconcerned the public is about the issue of plagiarism, and I fear Coulter will play into this. The rules which bind honorable people don't even begin to apply to her.)

4 chapters on evolution almost verbatim from Debenski & Behe (both writers known for their honest and sincere writing :sarcasm: ). In her defense, she has publicly stated she did so (and they signed off on it), although I'm not sure if its correctly cited in her book.
