Arctic sea levels dropping steadily (may affect Earth's rotation)
http://nunatsiaq.com/news/climate/60630_04.html

Sea levels in the Arctic have been falling by a little more than two millimetres a year — exactly the opposite of what is happening elsewhere.

“It’s enough to be significant. It’s remarkable that it’s the opposite sign of what we see in the rest of the world,” said researcher Remko Scharroo.

... The drop in sea levels may mean that water is flowing out of the Arctic to the south.

The flow of water out of the Arctic could have an impact on the earth’s orbit, as more water settles closer to the equator.

And a lot of water around the middle could cause variations in the rotation of the Earth. Days might even lengthen “as the Earth would get more bulky in the middle” and turn on its axis more slowly.

7. Actually, we are spinning faster since that last Tsunami.
Maybe we'll get a negative total change?

And I plan to win the lottery next weekend.

3. eh. I'm suspicious of a science writer who can't use the word "orbit"
correctly. Who knows what else they got wrong.

4. The earth gently pirouettes on her axis and then spreads her
arms (water) to slow the rotation even more.... how elegant. All I wanna know is will it effect Halliburton's bottom line.... they practically own Louisiana.

There's a pond I've been to that is composed of two small pools of water that dump into a third larger pond on the bottom. If you put even one small stone on the spillway of the top pool, it changes the depth of every pond.

We're fucked.

6. Tool..... Learn to Swim, (Graphic Lyrics)
Some say the end is near.
Some say well see armageddon soon.
I certainly hope we will.
I sure could use a vacation from this

Bullshit three ring circus sideshow of
Freaks

Here in this hopeless fucking hole we call la
The only way to fix it is to flush it all away.
Any fucking time. any fucking day.
Learn to swim, Ill see you down in arizona bay.

Fret for your figure and
Fret for your latte and
Fret for your lawsuit and
Fret for your hairpiece and
Fret for your prozac and
Fret for your pilot and
Fret for your cable and
Fret for your car.
Its a
Bullshit three ring circus sideshow of
Freaks

Here in this hopeless fucking hole we call la
The only way to fix it is to flush it all away.
Any fucking time. any fucking day.
Learn to swim, Ill see you down in arizona bay.

Some say a comet will fall from the sky.
Followed by meteor showers and tidal waves.
Followed by faultlines that cannot sit still.
Followed by millions of dumbfounded dipshits.

Some say the end is near.
Some say well see armageddon soon.
I certainly hope we will cuz
I sure could use a vacation from this

Silly shit, stupid shit...

One great big festering neon distraction,
Ive a suggestion to keep you all occupied.

Learn to swim.

Moms gonna fix it all soon.
Moms comin round to put it back the way it ought to be.

Learn to swim.

Fuck all his clones.
Fuck all those gun-toting
Hip gangster wannabes.

Learn to swim.

Fuck retro anything.
Fuck your tattoos.
Fuck all you junkies and
Fuck your short memory.

Learn to swim.

Fuck smiley glad-hands
With hidden agendas.
Fuck these dysfunctional,
Insecure actresses.

Learn to swim.

Cuz Im praying for rain
And Im praying for tidal waves
I wanna see the ground give way.
I wanna watch it all go down.
Mom please flush it all away.
I wanna watch it go right in and down.
I wanna watch it go right in.
Watch you flush it all away.

Time to bring it down again.
Dont just call me pessimist.
Try and read between the lines.
I cant imagine why you wouldnt
Welcome any change, my friend.

I wanna see it all come down.

9. Getting more bulky in the middle? Not the first time that's been said.
Edited on Fri Jun-30-06 09:23 PM by mcscajun
I heard a bell ringing in my head when I saw that line about "Earth would get more bulky in the middle."

Didn't take me but a minute to pull this out of my reference files, from Space.com, August 2002 (emphasis mine):

Something strange has been going on under our feet for the past four years. Earth's gravity field suddenly shifted gears and began getting flatter, reversing a course of centuries during which the planet and its gravity field grew rounder each year.

The scientists who noticed the change and report it in the Aug. 2 issue of the journal Science suspect Earth itself may be flattening out, with the oceans rising near the equator, but they aren't sure.

What they do know is that Earth has never been round. It has always bulged at the equator and is about 0.3 percent fatter there, partly a result of the planet's rotation.

Yet ever since the last Ice Age, the planet has been getting rounder as ground beneath the polar regions, relieved of the weight from ice that was miles thick in places, has been rebounding. In some parts of Scandinavia and Canada, the ground rises a quarter-inch (1 centimeter) per year.

Much more here...

If those scientists weren't sure in 2002, I'll wager they're DAMNED sure now.

20. A place you may be able to read at....
www.ascension2000.com

“Reading your online books has pushed me across the point of no return. I cannot go back to what once was; I can now only go forward. My old life is gone, and I must now deal with the thousand questions that have sprung up from inside of me. I believe that an event referred to as the Ascension is indeed drawing near. These days, I can see the signs, and the evidence you have compiled erased the last shreds of doubt.”

14. There was actually a thread on this in E/E a while back
I think their conclusion is garbage, what they're proposing is completely immeasurable: 2 cm change with respect to the radius of the Earth? They claim to have weeded out things like tides and wave crests, but I find that next to impossible given the enormity of what they're looking at. I mean this could even be caused by a slight decay in the satelite's orbit....

That being said, Sea Levels in the Arctic actually probably are dropping due to isostatic rebound.

Maybe Gaia just needs to get to the gym.

Well, LOL, but not LOL.

Even if one-one-hundredth of what we hear about climate change, waters shifting, etc. is true ... this is, indeed, very scary.

19. How about an exercise program to reduce the middle?
If we all go the equator and water ski to the next contient, the wake should move the water away from the center. Then we can build a giant wall to hold back the waters from reaching the middle again. LOL LOL LOL LOL
