GOP Candidate's Call for Labor Camp Rebuked
WASHINGTON -- A Republican gubernatorial candidate's call for creation of a forced labor camp for illegal immigrants drew rebukes Friday from two GOP lawmakers, who labeled it a low point in the immigration debate.

Don Goldwater, nephew of the late Sen. Barry Goldwater, caused an international stir this week when EFE, a Mexican news service, quoted him as saying he wanted to hold undocumented immigrants in camps to use them "as labor in the construction of a wall and to clean the areas of the Arizona desert that they're polluting."
...
"That Mr. Goldwater is either unaware of or indifferent to the loaded symbolism, injustice and un-Americanism of his 'plan' to address the many serious issues caused by illegal immigration reveals his flaws as a candidate and a stunning lack of respect for the basic values of a generous and decent society," McCain said in a statement.

Kolbe said that if the comments are true, Goldwater "has demonstrated his complete unworthiness for public office, and I am confident he will be soundly rejected by Republicans from the party of Barry Goldwater, who consistently demonstrated his compassion and respect for all people. This is a sad day in the national debate on immigration policy."

1. Yes, turn them into slaves
I swear some of these people are just hateful and don't care about the border, but want to punish people.

3. I wonder if names like Buchenwald...
...and Bergen Belsen are trademarked? Maybe we could build concentration camp theme parks, where we could all go to watch the 'illegals' work out their lives for our amusement. Disney could build the camps and name them something like 'Mousewitz' or 'Duckau'.

4. We had a system like that once, only it was called "slavery"
The great thing about it was that it was kind of an 'affirmative action' program. :eyes:

This seems a good time to recall a quote from Barbara Bush, live from the Astrodome:

"And so many of the people in the arena here, you know, were underprivileged anyway, so this, this is working very well for them."

These people are NUTS. :grr:

6. Not quite
slaves at least were valuable property. Unlike the Nazi camps where they were worked until they dropped.

21. Slaves weren't all that valuable in the Americas at first.
They were worked to death in the cane fields of the Caribbeans. They became much more valuable after their importation was made illegal around 1807 by Jefferson. Prior to that, they were fairly valuable when it came time for figuring out a state's census for purposes of congressional representation however.

24. The Germans had a similar system - all their 'undesireables' went into
forced labor camps too.

And still the public sleeps...

He's so out of whack even his own are dumping on him. Good to know this kind of attitude is still not mainstream, though I fear we're getting there courtesy of the lou dobbs' and tom tancredos of this world.

9. wow
what a total nut case. Nothing the GOP does surprises me anymore though. I have pretty much come to terms with the fact that they truly are a fascist party and our Democrats are the innefective German Social Democrats.

Why can't these Trogs hold their tongue and vanish from history? I'm sure the GOP would LOVE TO go along with it, but they have an election to steal so...

17. Is he greedy and vicious, like a Republican, or simply profoundly stupid,
like a Republican?

From the article:
Goldwater made a similar comment at an April anti-immigration rally.

"Build us that wall _ now!" Goldwater said, referring to a proposal to add 700 miles of fences along the U.S.-Mexico border. He promised then that if elected, he would put illegal immigrants in a tent city on the border and use their labor to build the wall.
(snip)

He's the lump on the right.

Has that crazed look so often found on the face of Zell Miller and that new pope, whatever his name is.

Among their other many problems, at the heart of the matter is that republicans are simple. Only a simpleton would propose a solution like this. They see "nail," they think "hammer." It would never occur to them to make a lap joint or a grooved joint.

The U.S. should help Mexico develop their economy. With the huge need for fuel, Randi Rhodes has suggested ethanol production. Look, for example, what Cuba is doing:

Cuba plans to triple sugar production to 3 million tons and join the world rush for alternative fuels, the official AIN news agency reported this week in Havana. “The Sugar Ministry is working to expand production by planting an additional 30% area thus increasing the annual harvest to three million tons”, added AIN.

22. Unbelievable.
Seriously, things are bordering on the surreal now. It's been heading that way the past decade or so, but this, wow. I'm just about speechless.

Forced Labor Camps?

Can someone sit him down in front of the all hitler all the time channel (History Channel) for a couple of days. Actually, that might give him more ideas. Scratch that.

26. Hey, cool! ANYTHING that brings bad publicity to one of the bad guys
is a good thing - for the rest of us.

It's also good when something like this underscores turmoil and dissention within the GOP. That, too, is only beneficial for the rest of us.
