HOUSE JUDICIARY COMMITTEE PASSES RESOLUTION TO DEMAND ALL INFORMATION
ON NSA PHONE RECORDS

http://www.rawstory.com/news/2006/House_Judiciary_Committee_passes_resolution_demanding_0621.html

BREAKING: The House Judiciary Committee unexpectedly passed a Democratic resolution calling on the Justice Department to turn over all agreements with telephone service providers to provide information to the National Security Agency without a warrant.

The measure was passed by a voice vote Wednesday morning with support of Republican Chairman F. James Sensenbrenner (R-WI).

Sensenbrenner told the Committee he would bring the measure to the full House floor for a vote if the Justice Department did not comply with his earlier requests for information about the program.

the resolution:

H.Res. 819, “Requesting the President and directing the Attorney General to submit to the House of Representatives all documents in the possession of the President and the Attorney General relating to requests made by the National Security Agency and other Federal agencies to telephone service providers requesting access to telephone communications records of persons in the United States and communications originating and terminating within the United States without a warrant”

1. Someone help me with this one!
I have been out of touch for a week. Does this bill have any teeth? Was its passage a surprise?

3. Geez- did someone spike the Congressional Kool-Aid with integrity?
Wonder what came over them? Will this actually happen? Could it be the non-partisan public outcry that spying on American citizens and listening to their personal phone calls might be illegal? Am I reading too much into this and allowing a wave of optimism to take over to quickly, thereby risking still another major let down when this all gets buried again by the Senate or vetoed by the "decider"?

6. I think it's midterms...
MANY conservatives are up in arms about this... as well as over the unacceptable level of executive power these thugs have demanded.

Maybe I'm just cynical... but...

13. Senselessbrenner is becoming uneasy
This is just to make him look good, it won't have any important effect. But Bryan Kennedy is coming after him and he needs to do something to improve his image. As Bryan said in his speech to the state convention, "Jim Sensenbrenner sees me in the rear view mirror waving at him, and objects in the mirror are closer than they appear!"

5. They won't get the requested information but the resolution was
still a positive step. At some point, Congress will rise to the point of doing something about the out of control Presidency. They DO have the power to do that, but currently, lack the courage to take charge.

7. Congress? Or Congressional Republicans?
I tend to think it's more the latter than the former... recall all the dems who joined in the call to clinton's impeachment trial after that witch hunt found the most meaningless infraction...

Oh, how I long for the days when people were sworn before giving testimony.

8. I meant all of the Congressmen. However, for it to reach that
level of crisis, even the slimiest of Congressmen will have to realize that the only hope, even for their own greedy skins, is to stop Bush. If we could have revamped the fraudulent voting process, which we haven't, the November election could have kicked out enough crooks and cowards to have begin the unseating of Bush and the Republican thugs that work with him.(backed by the oil and arms industries)

9. This is a positive step
in that it shows that there is still a pulse in Congress. Unfortunately, it may be too late, since they already enthroned the Unitary Executive when they annointed Alito.
