Ricketts raises 'L' word; Nelson calls it partisan rhetoric

BY ROBYNN TYSVER

WORLD-HERALD STAFF WRITER

What do liberal icons Hillary Rodham Clinton and Ted Kennedy have to do with the U.S. Senate race in Nebraska?

Republican Senate candidate Pete Ricketts

A lot, according to Republican Senate candidate Pete Ricketts.

The former Ameritrade executive said Tuesday that the two prominent national Democratic senators, whom Republicans love to hate, could take control of the U.S. Senate if he is not elected.

Ricketts' opponent, Democratic Sen. Ben Nelson, countered that such "campaign rhetoric" would not fly with most Nebraskans.

He also said most Nebraskans are familiar with his record of cutting taxes and reducing spending.

Ricketts is trying to unseat Nelson this fall in a race that has the potential to be one of the most expensive in the state's history.

Ricketts spent $5 million of his own money in winning the GOP nomination last month. On Tuesday, he released his first blitz of television ads since the primary.

In the commercials, Ricketts labels himself a "Reagan Republican" who will work to "cut your taxes, cut spending."

5. Probably not much
But this is, after all, Nebraska, where the word "liberal" weighs heavier in people's minds than the actual facts of whether government spending or government programs have been cut. But if Nelson is re-elected, and he should be, he'll be on the Democratic side of the chamber, and will count for the Democrats when it's time to vote for Senate leadership. If the Democrats have a majority come January, Nelson will be voting to give subpoena power to Committee Chairman Kennedy, Committee Chairman Clinton and Committee Chairman Feingold.

And I'd be very much okay with that!

3. "a Reagan Republican" -- lol
--first they have to be sure to differentiate themselves from "a dumb@$$ war-profiteering corrupt incompetent lying worthless soulless scandal-plagued * Republican"
--but anybody who finds the idea of "an Iran-Contra swaggering dumb@$$ washed-up two-bit movie actor Reagan Republican" attractive deserves the lying thieving outsourcing payola-pocketing repuke government they're going to get.

7. It is a no-brainer that Nelson must win; Dems cannot lose any
seats and must pick up several.
