RIP, Mr. Cameron.

Founder of black museum dies at 92
BY EMILY FREDRIX | THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

MILWAUKEE - James Cameron, who survived an attempted lynching by a white mob and went on to found America's Black Holocaust Museum, died Sunday at the age of 92.

Cameron had lymphoma for about five years, said Marissa Weaver, chairwoman of the Milwaukee-based museum's board.

In 1930, in Marion, Ind., Cameron and two friends were arrested and accused of killing a white man during a robbery and raping the man's companion.

A mob broke them out of the local jail and hanged Cameron's two friends, then placed a rope around his neck. Then 16, he was spared when a man in the crowd proclaimed his innocence....

2. He had 75 years to live his life after that day

Without which, there would have been no such museum, no voice to remember his lost friends and others who were killed for no better reason.

I wonder what lives his friends would have led.

RIP, Mr. Cameron.

3. Here is the Photo Caution Graphic

Lynching 1930

A mob of 10,000 whites took sledgehammers to the county jailhouse doors to get at these two young blacks accused of raping a white girl; the girl’s uncle saved the life of a third by proclaiming the man’s innocence. Although this was Marion, Ind., most of the nearly 5,000 lynchings documented between Reconstruction and the late 1960s were perpetrated in the South. (Hangings, beatings and mutilations were called the sentence of “Judge Lynch.”) Some lynching photos were made into postcards designed to boost white supremacy, but the tortured bodies and grotesquely happy crowds ended up revolting as many as they scared. Today the images remind us that we have not come as far from barbarity as we’d like to think

6. I think 'picnic' is not connected.
Edited on Mon Jun-12-06 11:08 AM by Gormy Cuss
Picnic comes from the French term pique nique, which means about the same thing (a gathering where assorted food is served.)

Having said that, I wouldn't be surprised to find evidence of faux etymology from some crackers who thought it was clever to make it shorthand for something else.

11. Has anyone here read his book, "A Time for Terror"?
I'm tempted to pick it up and was wondering if anyone could provide a synopsis.
