Lieberman faces showdown over Iraq
Lieberman faces showdown over Iraq

By John Whitesides, Political Correspondent
1 hour, 4 minutes ago

MERIDEN, Connecticut (Reuters) - After years of ardent support for the Iraq war, Connecticut Sen. Joseph Lieberman (news, bio, voting record) could become that conflict's first big political casualty in a Democratic primary race fueled by rising anti-war anger.

Lieberman, the party's vice presidential nominee in 2000, faces a growing challenge from a political neophyte who has rallied Democrats angered by the senator's enthusiastic backing of the war and willingness to support Republican President George W. Bush on other issues.

Challenger Ned Lamont's underdog bid to unseat Lieberman in Democratic-leaning Connecticut could offer an early gauge of the intensity of anti-war sentiment ahead of November's midterm elections, along with a measure of the influence of the Internet activists and bloggers who have flocked to his cause.

"Senator Lieberman has cheered on the president every step of the way when it comes to the invasion of Iraq, and he is too quick to compromise on core Democratic principles," Lamont, a businessman and former Greenwich town selectman, told Reuters.

3. Good. I hope he's sweating right now.
As far as Mr. Lamont, he seems to be the "Darling of the Internet", and he's managed to build up some nice contributions....

I'm seriously thinking about contributing to Mr. Lamont. I'm not even in Connecticut; I'm in Portland.

But I'd pay to see Liarman bite the dust (good entertainment).

5. Wow!
A difference in one issue gets him blackballed out of the party? Wouldn't it be more prudent to counsel him to return to the fold? What if he wins the election? Then what?

8. Sadly...
There is no counseling Joementum. He's gonna tell us how it all works, because...well, because he's Joementum.

He isn't really liking his fellow Dems these days. He has intimated, several times, that if he is not re-nominated, he would run as an Independent.

There is a word for Dems like that: "Scumbag".

That's because they aren't behaving like the Repukes he's worked so hard to re-shape Dems into.

11. One issue...
LOL

In Connecticut, rape counseling activists say a recent study concludes that about 20% of state hospitals routinely refuse to offer emergency contraceptives to rape victims who are determined to be ovulating at the time they're attacked. A proposed bill would require them to do so.

And what sayith Holy Joe about this? According to The New Haven Register:

This fight isn't exclusively being drawn along party lines.

U.S. Sen. Joseph I. Lieberman, who often takes a conservative line on social issues, is facing a liberal Democratic primary challenge from wealthy Greenwich businessman Ned Lamont. But that hasn't stopped Lieberman from supporting the approach of the Catholic hospitals when it comes to contraceptives for rape victims.

Lieberman said he believes hospitals that refuse to give contraceptives to rape victims for "principled reasons" shouldn't be forced to do so. "In Connecticut, it shouldn't take more than a short ride to get to another hospital," he said.

20. You are right to bring up that it isn't just one issue.
That is a very serious one.

Another one is censorship. Holy Joe just loves censorship to death.

12. It's hardly one issue
Not just going along with the war but every time that Bush has pushed out something that has taken away more of our rights, Joe can be see on his knees, kissing George's ass over it.

14. No - because he is a SLIMEBALL who will NOW say anything to get re-elected
Sorry, he's had his chance. He's been and EMBARASSEMENT to the Democratic Party since at least 2000.

His time is past.

Time to FORCE him to retire.

He is worse than a repuke - he is a "democrat" who criticizes others for criticizing a REPUKE!

That is lower than pond scum in my book!

19. First, Iraq is a pretty big issue.
Second, it isn't just that he voted for the Iraq War Resolution. Most Democrats in the Senate did. It's that he has shown the most unrelenting support for a failed policy among any Democrat and even among most Republicans.

26. In all fairness ....
Hillary hasnt exactly endeared herself to Democrats lately, either .... Her triangulation is rather unbecoming ....

Lieberman is not favored by a good many of his own party members, and that is his own fault; NOT the party members ... this is no underhanded conspiracy to ruin him .... this is not about selfishness or vanity: it is about members of a party recognizing one among them who does not share their thinking ....

Joe has ONE person to 'blame' if he loses ..... himself ....

We are NOT Republicans .... and Joe seems to share way too many republican attributes for a good many Democrats ..... He cannot avoid the judgement of his own constituents today .....

21. Lieberman's personal opinion
Another quote from the same original article...

"On the war, I've done what I thought was right for my country. I obviously haven't done it for political reasons," Lieberman told Reuters.

Hey Joe- quick reminder of your job description. You were elected to represent the citizens of CT, NOT yourself. You're being paid to do what's right for the citizens of CT, their will....NOT YOURS.
YOUR opinion of what is right for the country is NOT what large majority of your constituents feel is right for the country. Your opinion is just that YOURS.

It's not what you think is right, it's what WE think is right. Public service...remember that concept? No?
Well, sir, its long overdue for your reality check. And in August we're going to serve it up cold. You've ignored us, your constituents for way too long, perhaps its time to become one again yourself.

31. He showed who he is committed to when he ran for both seats
When he ran for his Senate seat while running for VP he showed where his loyalty lies. Joe is out for Joe only - a total opportunist. He was never committed to the Gore/Lieberman ticket, and he's certainly not committed to either the Democratic Party (if so, how dare he even entertain the notion as an Independent run), nor the citizens of Conn (if he were, he might start paying attention to their view and not the other way around).

I've been living in TX for the past nine years and I've happily donated to Lamont's campaign and will be happy to do so again. We've got to throw the 'Liebermans' of this Party out, and show the Country that Dems don't have to Republican Lite to get elected or be effective, in fact, doing so will earn them a ticket out of power.
