Supreme Court to hear education race case
WASHINGTON - The Supreme Court said Monday it will decide the extent to which public schools can use race in deciding school assignments, setting the stage for a landmark affirmative action ruling.

Justices will hear appeals from a Seattle parents group and a Kentucky parent, ruling for the first time on diversity plans used by a host of school districts around the country.

Race cases have been difficult for the justices. The court's announcement that it will take up the cases this fall provides the first sign of an aggressiveness by the court under new Chief Justice John Roberts.

The court rejected a similar case in December when moderate Justice Sandra Day O'Connor was still on the bench. The outcome of this case will turn on her successor, Samuel Alito.

1. I heard Roberts had a hard time filling the slate here.
Guess he has to go with something.

3. I'm not sure how I feel about cases like this.
I'd like to see all schools diversified with man different student backgrounds, but I have a personal story that has caused a lot of dissent too.

My son bought a home in a neighborhood 1/2 mile from his children's school. It's a nice neighborhood, but by no stretch high-buck! His house cost $150,000 and has 2 acres of land. 3 months ago, the local schoolboard decided to force 50% of the students to attend a school across town, around 6 miles, and 50% of the students from the other school will be bussed to the school in my son's neighborhood. He's very upset because of this change and everyone in the neighborhood across town is just as angry! Neither school is currently segregated, but the one my grandchildren currently attend is 15% black kids and theschool across town is about 15% white.

I understand the diversity argument, but it's very difficult for all the parents to accept their kids having to ride busses every day instead of just walking to school!

4. "How long,not too long?"
Lets upgrade the schools, good teachers for all the schools, this has been a political soccer ball since 1954,it should not be about race,it should be whats best for our kids and our country. We are cutting off our noses to spite our faces, when we undereducate our kids.Just think what those billions of dollars would do to help our schools instead of spending that money on evil wars,SHAME,SHAME,SHAME on you America for letting the greedy, heartless republicans and democrats steal our future.
