Abrupt dismissals shake up Sacramento
By Gary Delsohn
SACRAMENTO BEE

SACRAMENTO - Governors always bring their own people with them when they assume power, but the way Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's staff is getting rid of some top officials is rattling nerves at the Capitol.

The state's motor vehicle director was called on his cell phone a few hours after Schwarzenegger was sworn in Monday and told to immediately clear out his desk. (snip)

(snip) The abrupt firings can also be seen as a sign of a new administration scrambling to put people in place in a hurry. Despite a promise earlier in the day to release to the media salaries for all the governor's new appointments, a spokesman said he was having "logistical problems" pulling together the information.

The governor's office did, however, release a list of dozens of last-minute appointments made by Gov. Gray Davis that Schwarzenegger was rescinding. (snip/...)

2. Its an unflattering picture
Not that it is going to make much of a difference.
There are still major, major economic problems to be reckoned with.
Who is behind him?

3. Yes, let's do this:
everyone who is a democrat in state political office in California - you are now a republican; everyone who is a republican in state political office in California = you are now a democrat.

Aside from the personal animus, I see no big changes!

Just leave my senators and my representative alone - but within the state government: please make them go away.

5. He doesn't even do that
He receives his opinions via telephone call, each and every morning, with memos throughout the day to keep him on track. The boy is a tool, nothing more.

Sounds just like the way the whole country-being run by someone who doesn't read, or watch TV, or Know anything about the real world.

8. firing everyone as a show of force is the act
of an incompetent moron. Daniel Snyder did this when he bought the Redskins and his ownership has been the most successful period in Redskin history.

<endsarcasm/>

15. In competent moron
Arnold may be an incompetent moron, and as a Skins fan I agree on Snyder. I do not see this as evidence of Arnolds incompetence. Clintons first act as president was to fire every US Attorney. And he was no incompetent moron.

Not every US Attorney was abruptly fired by President Clinton.

11. So what? Political appointees get fired when an administration changes.
So what's the news? Bill Clinton fired most of Bush 41's people; Bush 43 fired most of Clinton's people. Always happens. Comes with the territory. Standard job risk of working in politics.

The only time I can recall serious questions raised about this was when Clinton sacked all the U.S. Attorneys nationwide right at the get-go. This isn't something I normally follow, but apparently the transition in this area has traditionally been slower so as not to disrupt ongoing investigations and prosecutions. U.S. Attorneys, therefore, have usually been replaced as their successors are identified, vetted, and appointed, but not before.

Clinton did it differently and ended up leaving many of these positions vacant for an extended period. I still don't know what was up with that, but it became grist for the conspiracy theory mill on Whitewater, etc.

12. the news is
that these people are being fired in a Big hurry, ie by cell phone, just hours after Arnold's nomination.
the news is not the firing itself.

13. Big hurry = repug new modus operanus
Haven't you noticed the thing with the repugs is a big hurry. Hurry approve the patriot act, hurry approve the war, hurry approve the perscription drug bill. No time to ask questions. Act in haste, repent in leisure....

14. Big hurry
As pointed out by another protestor, Clinton fired all of the US attorneys. This was done in a big hurry. If memory serves me right, and I believe it does, it was his first act as president.
