Karl Rove Indicted on Charges of Perjury, Lying to Investigators
Saturday 13 May 2006

Special Prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald spent more than half a day Friday at the offices of Patton Boggs, the law firm representing Karl Rove.

During the course of that meeting, Fitzgerald served attorneys for former Deputy White House Chief of Staff Karl Rove with an indictment charging the embattled White House official with perjury and lying to investigators related to his role in the CIA leak case, and instructed one of the attorneys to tell Rove that he has 24 hours to get his affairs in order, high level sources with direct knowledge of the meeting said Saturday morning.

Robert Luskin, Rove's attorney, did not return a call for comment. Sources said Fitzgerald was in Washington, DC, Friday and met with Luskin for about 15 hours to go over the charges against Rove, which include perjury and lying to investigators about how and when Rove discovered that Valerie Plame Wilson was a covert CIA operative and whether he shared that information with reporters, sources with direct knowledge of the meeting said.

It was still unknown Saturday whether Fitzgerald charged Rove with a more serious obstruction of justice charge. Sources close to the case said Friday that it appeared very likely that an obstruction charge against Rove would be included with charges of perjury and lying to investigators.

110. What "attacks"?
His credibility IS at stake.

Will Pitt himself has said they're putting themselves on the line over this. It is a simple fact, and perfectly acceptable to state it. You are falsely portraying others as "attacking" Leopold and truthout.

It is a disturbing reaction to a healthy questioning of information.

I thoroughly enjoyed it; he is a bright conversationalist who makes you feel like there is no one else in the world that counts but you when you converse. And you do converse. And he has, and he is no youngster, this twinkle in his eye. I think I know where that comes from. As The Monkees sang, Valerie. I would twinkle too.

40. Actually, he's not too rough on the eyes, either.
At least for me. She's a lucky gal. AND he's probably the best husband of the New American Century. Certainly Husband-of-the-Year. john mccain could take loyal, devoted husband lessons from Joseph Wilson, who stood by his wife and defended her honor when she'd been assaulted by these people. mccain went and hugged and kissed the guy who led the charge against his wife and their adopted daughter. john mccain evidently had no problem with that. THIS wife, mother, and adopted daughter will NOT forget that. Joseph Wilson is the kind of husband I'd like to have - and in fact, I'm happy to say I actually DO have.

61. bingo

Thinking that this speech was staged for a politically gainful date isn't a stretch by any means. Take a look at the great pains this administration takes to paint and frame information. I've been thinking the illegal immigration issue as a whole has been nothing but an attempt to steer public attention away from the war, the economy, and Bush's abysmal leadership and onto something that he can manage and spin. If the Rove is cuffed on Monday, then it will only further cement my view on this matter.

I'm hoping turd-blossom will enjoy a few years at a F.P.M.I.T.A. prison.

42. Jeralyn at TalkLeft says they may have been hammering out a plea
that failed-

http://talkleft.com/new_archives/014833.html

Update: Jason said the meeting lasted 15 hours. That tells me they were hammering out a plea deal to the charges. Were they successful in coming to terms? Stay tuned.

Update: I'm still thinking out the scenarios. If I had to take bets, I'd say efforts at a plea agreement failed. Why? This line from Jason's report:

instructed one of the attorneys to tell Rove that he has 24 hours to get his affairs in order, high level sources with direct knowledge of the meeting said Saturday morning.

It sounds to me like they went round and round for hours and weren't able to come to a meeting of the minds. So my take is Karl Rove will be fighting the Indictment.

true, Mr. Leopold is made. If not, people should stop listening to him. This article looks like one of those career decisions. Moreover, if it turns out not to be the case, I'll be really pissed at him for getting my hopes up.

39. I can't imagine Leopold would stake his entire career on this story
if he weren't absolutely confident in his sources. Aside from my own deep desire for this to be true, I don't believe that, at this point in his career, Leopold would commit the royal fuck-up of getting this wrong.

Which means it must be true. And it also means that Leopold is about to be the next rock star of journalism. Good for him! :)

of the administration, involving outing a spy who was working on protecting us from WMDs. "Bush's Brain" is indicted. This is big news, and yet our "free press" hides it from the public. Remember Clinton coverage? Non-stop 24-7 coverage over a blow-job.

This was worse than the friday dump. This was the saturday slip.

If Jason Leopold is right, he'll get no credit in the Corporate Media. If they mention the story as originating outside their world at all, it will be as a namelss blog or website, or one of their favorite phrases, "the blogosphere has been abuzz with the story".

If Jason Leopold is wrong, the Corporate Media may mention his site and his name in passing, nothing more. Limbaugh, Hannity and the Freepers, OTOH, will declare a holiday and go crazy talking about the "lunatic left" (again).

65. Hot Damn....
I won't pop the cork until I hear it on MSM (they can't deny this story). I have been following this saga since it first hit the net and MSM. I told folks back then that this had the potential to equal Watergate (this was before the latest NSA flap). Shortly after it came out, Wilson was on with Chris Matthews.

Now, I remember his standoff with Saddam before the first Gulf War. I thought the guy had balls then. But when I heard him talking with Chris-I knew Bush had bit off more than he could chew. To use a quaint expression...his words were iron. He resonated truth. I believed everything he said and have never wavered from that. The guy was an awesome civil servant for this country-and his wife was even more so-if you could imagine that. This whole affair has pissed me off. Outing your own people and exposing them to retaliation for petty, self serving revenge is the worst form of cowardice.

The CIA rank and file have long memories and long knives, which is why the Bush Admin. was so hot to gut it and create a lap dog agency. They have done the unthinkable and politicized and polarized the CIA. Can't get good info from a polarized source.

73. The article contradicts itself
Special Prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald spent more than half a day Friday at the offices of Patton Boggs, the law firm representing Karl Rove. During the course of that meeting, Fitzgerald served attorneys for former Deputy White House Chief of Staff Karl Rove with an indictment charging the embattled White House official with perjury and lying to investigators related to his role in the CIA leak case, and instructed one of the attorneys to tell Rove that he has 24 hours to get his affairs in order, high level sources with direct knowledge of the meeting said Saturday morning.

...then a couple paragraphs down...

Speaking on condition of anonymity Friday night, sources confirmed Rove's indictment was imminent.

So which is it? Was Rove indicted, or is an indictment 'imminent'?

"Fitzgerald spent more than half a day Friday at the offices of Patton Boggs, the law firm representing Karl Rove..."

vs.

Fitz spent "15 hours" talking to Rove's lawyer Friday.

Which is it - 15 hours (all day) or "more than half a day"???

The article doesn't pass the smell test.

a full day connotes 8 hours (a full work day). 15 hours is a whole lot more than that. I've never heard "more than half a day" referred to as meaning "15 hours" before in my life. I've never known anyone who talks that way. And how on earth could Fitzgerald spend 15 hours with Rove's attorney in 1 day, and why on earth would he waste that amount of time when all he needs to do is serve the papers on him? The story doesn't make sense.

ninth grade journalism class? Not mine - but that was 1966 and kinda in the boondocks... We DID have a 12th-grade Government class, though, but it didn't cover anything remotely like the Rovester's case. (Cheney's case.)

Anyway, other blogs are reporting Rove's imminent indictment, "either today or Monday" - with several congressional sources. I guess "today" is out, since it's now yesterday, so I'm betting Monday.

No, I don't eat hats, so don't ask.

We don't ban the NYT because Jayson Blair lied, nor USAToday because Kelly lied, nor and other publication whose editors didn't catch lying writers immediately.

We should let Truthout tell whatever stories they have to tell. We are adults - each Duer can evaluate the stories with or without a jaundiced eye, as each of us wants. Banning is the refuge of a scoundrel, IMO.

Back when this story broke, after I had seen some of the blogosphere's reaction, it occured to me that this might be the one things that brings this cabal down.

The hubris they exhibited during and after this scandal lays bare the blatant and criminal disregard for the Consitution, the rule of law and the lives of Americans who will not do and say as the Bushistas see fit.

For me personally however the best part of this is that today is my birthday! Thank you Gebus for the lovely gift ;)

Cheney the Focus of CIA Leak Court Filing

By PETE YOST
Associated Press Writer
Posted May 14 2006, 3:05 AM EDT

WASHINGTON -- In a new court filing, the prosecutor in the CIA leak case revealed that Vice President Dick Cheney made handwritten references to CIA officer Valerie Plame -- albeit not by name -- before her identity was publicly exposed.

The new court filing is the second in little more than a month by Special Counsel Patrick Fitzgerald mentioning Cheney as being closely focused with his then-chief of staff, I. Lewis Libby, on Bush administration critic Joseph Wilson, who is married to Plame.

With the two court filings, Fitzgerald has pointed to an important role for the vice president in the weeks leading up to the leaking of Plame's identity.

In the latest court filing late Friday, Fitzgerald said he intends to introduce at Libby's trial in January a copy of Wilson's op-ed article in The New York Times "bearing handwritten notations by the vice president." The article was published on July 6, 2003, eight days before Plame's identity was exposed by conservative columnist Bob Novak.

...Kennedey's plane - Check. Lots of stories on that.

Rove struck by indictment - Nope. Nothing yet.

If I don't see independent information soon I will have to assume that this is dust from an overactive rumourmill.

136. I think they added the word "business" after posting.
Someone earlier in this thread pasted the original wording...without "business".

And I think you're right, we're looking at about Wednesday evening.

Rove Indictment Report Denied

By Staff Reporter of the Sun
May 15, 2006

spokesman for a top White House aide under scrutiny in a criminal leak probe, Karl Rove, yesterday vigorously denied an Internet report that the political adviser to President Bush was told that he had been indicted on charges of perjury and lying to investigators.

"The story is a complete fabrication," the spokesman for Mr. Rove, Mark Corallo, told The New York Sun. "It is both malicious and disgraceful."

A liberal Web site, Truthout.org, carried a report authored by Jason Leopold, alleging that Mr. Rove's attorney, Robert Luskin, was given the indictment during a marathon, 15-hour meeting in Washington Friday with the special prosecutor handling the inquiry, Patrick Fitzgerald. The site also reported that Mr. Rove had advised senior White House officials that he would be indicted

156. CBS news is not "covering it." The commentator is reporting
on what IS news which is the "buzz" on the Internet stirred up over the Truthout report--in other words the story about Truthout has become the news.

I am increasingly skeptical and believe this should have been long ago removed from LBN forum.

THE NEWS

May 17, 2006 -- LATE EDITION -- WMR can report tonight on more details concerning the confusing reports regarding Karl Rove and Special Prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald from last Friday. WMR can confirm that the appearance of Attorney General Alberto Gonzales before the Grand Jury at the US Federal Courthouse in Washington was a formality in which the jury informed the Attorney General of their decision to indict Karl Rove. That proceeding lasted for less than 30 minutes and took place shortly after noon. Gonzales's personal security detachment was present in the courthouse during the Grand Jury briefing. From the courthouse, Gonzales's motorcade proceeded directly down Constitution Avenue to the Department of Justice.

According to sources within the Patton and Boggs law firm, Karl Rove was present at the law firm's building on M Street. WMR was told by a credible source that a Patton and Boggs attorney confirmed that Fitzgerald paid a visit to the law firm to inform Rove attorney Robert Luskin and Rove that an indictment would be returned by the Grand Jury against Rove. Contrary to other reports, some of which may have emanated from the Rove camp in order to create diversions and smokescreens, the meetings at Patton and Boggs did not last 15 hours nor was a 24-hour notice of intent to indict delivered to Rove. In the Scooter Libby case last October, after the Grand Jury decided to indict Libby on Friday, October 21 and the Attorney General personally heard the decision the same day at a meeting with the jury, the actual indictment was issued the following Friday, October 28. Several sources have told WMR that an announcement concerning the indictment of Rove will be made on Friday, May 19 generally following the same scenario from October 28, 2005 -- the posting of the indictment on the Special Prosecutor's web site followed by a press conference at Main Justice.

WMR was also told by a credible source that part of the reason for Fitzgerald's visit to Patton and Boggs was to inform Rove attorney Luskin that he has moved into the category of a "subject" of the special prosecutor's investigation as a result of a conversation with Time reporter Viveca Novak, in which Novak told Luskin that Rove was a source for Time's Matt Cooper. The special prosecutor, who has prosecuted one defense attorney in the Hollinger case, is reportedly investigating whether Luskin, as an officer of the court, may have violated laws on obstruction of justice.

WMR has also discovered that last year Rove, realizing he remained a lightning rod in the CIA Leakgate scandal, made preliminary plans to move into the private sector from the White House to take political heat off the Bush administration. However, as it became clear that he was in over his head legally and his legal bills piled up, Rove decided to remain at the White House.
