Bush to Speak About Immigration on Monday (Prime Time Speech)
Edited on Fri May-12-06 09:28 AM by brooklynite

WASHINGTON - President Bush plans to address the nation Monday night on the immigration debate, trying to build momentum for legislation that could provide millions of illegal immigrants a chance to become American citizens.

The White House said it was seeking time from television networks for the president's remarks.

"This is crunch time," Tony Snow, the new White House press secretary said Friday at his first off-camera, or informal, briefing.

On Thursday, Senate leaders reached a deal to revive a broad immigration bill that had appeared doomed just several weeks ago.

I have to say I don't understand the political thinking behind this. He'll piss off the networks with the financial loss of advertising during sweeps month; he'll piss off uninterested voters who want to watch the season finales, and whichever position he takes on the immigtration question, he'll piss off voters on the other side of the argument.

5. If he screws with airings of Prison Break and/or 24
He's got this viewer pissed off! Great timing Tony! Wonder what the entertainment side of your former Faux network will do? Will they ignore the president and air their two fan fave hits or will they mess with their schedule?

9. Sounds nuts on the face of it
I can't see any reason at all why they'd think that settling on an immigration bill would help his numbers much. And numbers have to be the reason for his going on TV. Based on past performances, he should be at 25% after speaking to the nation.
