'Illegal' McGavick funds alleged
Democrats' complaint says Safeco gave him 'golden parachute'

By NEIL MODIE, P-I REPORTER

After Mike McGavick became a U.S. Senate candidate but while still chief executive of Safeco, the company agreed to give him a lucrative "golden parachute" that amounted to an illegal corporate campaign contribution, the state Democratic Party contends.

"The corporation's 'sweetening of the deal' for Mr. McGavick after he became a candidate was a blatant violation of federal law," state Democratic Party Chairman Dwight Pelz charged in a complaint being filed with the Federal Election Commission today.

The former insurance executive, a Republican, is challenging first-term Democratic Sen. Maria Cantwell in the state's highest-profile race this fall.

5. Also a great way for Safeco to get a tax deductible political contrib.
By making in his "compensation" it would be a regular business expense.

Dems file federal complaint against Senate contender

By DAVID AMMONS
AP POLITICAL WRITER

OLYMPIA, Wash. -- Washington Democrats on Wednesday asked the Federal Elections Commission to investigate U.S. Senate challenger Mike McGavick's $17 million "golden parachute" from Safeco Insurance Co.

McGavick's campaign said the complaint is bogus.

"Everything was by the book," McGavick spokesman Elliott Bundy said.

The state Democrats filed a formal complaint with the watchdog agency asking for an investigation into the compensation that McGavick got when he resigned as president and CEO of the insurance company to run for the Senate.

"As a candidate for U.S. Senate, his $17 million windfall appears to be a special interest favor that illegally subsidizes his campaign," state Democratic Chairman Dwight Pelz said in a statement.
