| Minutemen threaten to build fence |
|
http://kvoa.com/Global/story.asp?S=4792406&nav=HMO6 PHOENIX The Minutemen are telling the government to deal with immigration, or they will. The border watch group is proposing a new fence along the U-S-Mexico border. Minutemen leader Chris Simcox says they're sending President Bush an ultimatum -- either deploy the National Guard and military reserves to the border by May 25th or beginning Memorial Day weekend, they'll break ground and begin building a border security fence. Simcox says six Arizona land owners, as well as land owners in California, New Mexico and Texas, have promised to allow the fence to be built on their land.

In ONE WEEK a worker can make what it takes a Month in their country to make. By being very thrifty, they can save up a small fortune, and then turn themselves in for a free ride home.
Think of what you would do for your family. Would you bend/break the law to provide food and care? To buy a house, to provide for the future, would you be separated from your family, knowing you were giving them a better life?
Bottom Line: Would you let a fence stop you?

| 4. The USA farm products create desperate economic migrants |
|
Considering, the territory was stolen (Mexican US war-1840's) and the demographics 160 years later has changed in states that border the USA. What is the problem? These are people who have established themselves in the USA and speak English. They are full citizens of the USA. Alot of the illegal migrants would stay if they could just grow corn in Mexico. If the USA would stop using tax dollars to subsidise their farmers corn production then it is likely that THE US farmers would not have the ability to dump their cheap corn on Mexico. This created economic migrants who come to USA in search of lousy paying jobs that support their families

the minimum wage there is $6.07 per DAY. You know that US ag subsidies give the US the ability to provide millions of pounds of grain products to the third world. I think that is a little more important than low margins for Mexican farmers.

Every dumbass' dollar that goes into building a fence on private land is one less that goes into Republican coffers or towards mail-order brides.
And I'd love to see them try and raise the tens, if not hundreds, of millions of dollars it would take to construct the security wall of their dreams. All that concrete, rebar and razor wire between North and South Korea wasn't built with greenstamps.

But I have a feeling this is a step in that direction. Undesirables are undesirables to them.
So what happens if an immigrant crosses these fences. Does he/she get shot?

I didn't say it was my cause. And I don't agree with their tactics. I was just saying from what I understood, they didn't like illegals. Let me make something clear. My beef is with ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS period. I don't care if a person is brown, white, orange, or yellow, if they aren't entering this country legally, I don't think they need to be here. If they are using LEGAL means to enter, then I'm all for them being here. THERE'S my actual feelings on the matter. Duckie

has nothing to do with decency. It is nearly impossible for Latinos to get into the US legally, and since they almost have to, they do it illegally. If we provided practical legal avenues, they would be used.
Rosa Parks did something illegal, too. So did Eugene V. Debs. If "legal" automatically means "correct" to you, you are very much mistaken.

The point is that illegal does not mean wrong. These people only want a decent life, and they have no legal means of achieving that. The only option left to them is to pursue this very reasonable goal, even if it is (wrongly) deemed illegal. It's called justice, and that is what I argue for.

so they have some land owners that say - sure. But not all land owners on the border (doesn't sound continuous), and if all through private donations money will come in and thus 'fence' parts go up - sporadically. Sounds like patchwork to me - pointless and thus a waste of donor money. A fool and his money... and all that.

|
HOUSTON -- A Houston company was raided Wednesday as part of a nationwide crackdown on illegal immigrants, KPRC Local 2 reported. Federal agents descended on two locations of IFCO Systems -- 6829 Flintrock Road near West Little York in northwest Harris County and 4900 North McCarty Road in northeast Houston. The sweeps began shortly before 9 a.m. Homeland Security buses left the facilities hours later with dozens of suspected undocumented workers on board. The exact number was not released. http://www.click2houston.com/news/8826281/detail.html

there will be a slipshod stretch of brick, mud, stick and dauble standing alone on a desert border for about 30 crumbling feet... an effigy to effort put forth. Inevitably there will be a memorial there to the one worker's life that was lost as a section crumbled down upon him, his workmates will have buried him on the spot, and packed up and went home.
Mission accomplished.

One of the only thing developers worry about that during their initial bulldozing and digging that they come upon old buried indian, Spanish, early settlers, settlements and artifacts. By law they must immediately stop and notify the authorities. It can take months/years before anthropoligists can study/research the area. Fines are extremely high and cost of delays can be extremely prohibitive.....are these vacation warriors even knowledgeable about these laws and are they capable of paying fines???
This should be a big source of amusement for border residents.

borders and the federal and state governments are seemingly unwilling to do anything for political reasons. They're worried about losing votes; I'm worried about losing lives, American lives, possibly yours. They all do a lot of talking but the problem persists. I'm happy to allow those who come legally with good intension's and a desire to assimilate but only after a background check. We all know that everyone who crosses our borders (be it north or south) does not have noble intension's when they get here. I for one want to see border security dramatically enhanced and at this point in the process, if someone wants to start a fence, I'm all for it. Hell, I may send them a few dollars to help out. For me, this isn't a political issue, it's a survival issue. There are people in this world who want to cross that border for one reason and one reason only, to detonate the big one. Frankly, that scares the hell out of me. Too many people continue to hold blinders over their eyes. Remember folks, 911 happened before Iraq not after. I'm afraid it will happen again. Only next time on a scale we couldn't believe. My 2 cents.

you send money to help support the scanning of incoming shipping containers. Even if some 'terrorists' cross the Rio Grande, are they going to carry a bomb with them?
I seem to recall that the East Germans built a really big fence across Berlin, mined it, and had armed guards on top of it. with orders to shoot on site. And that didn't stop people who really, really wanted to getting from West Berlin to East Berlin and back. You can stop the people who aren't a threat with a fence and troops, not the trained people who are really intent on causing trouble.

And I'd like to point you to two other examples of societies that were great, and built walls. China and the Roman Empire. The walls were the beginning of the decline. oops.

Thinking practically, this is THOUSANDS of miles of fence we are talking about, we cannot man it, nor even afford to maintain such a structure. You have harsh deserts to build through, uneven terrain, and in addition to that, rivers and streams, but not forests at least. Its an impossible task, and can be defeated with a wire cutter that costs 15 bucks, the people who advocate for this albatross are simply stupid.

1000 miles of the Rio Grande winding through wildest west and south Texas, and 1000 miles of thorny desert, shifting sand dunes, rugged mountains, and wide rivers bordering New Mexico, Arizona, and California.

He's worried about terrorists coming into the country illegally to set off the "big one", if he is talking about a nuclear bomb, they are probably driving across the border. They could just as easily get in through Canada as through Mexico, so build a fence for both borders, and lets not forget the coasts, fence them up too, Fortess Amerika! Uber Alles!

|
but what about manning it? maintaining it? repairing it?
and even building it, at ten foot high concrete fence will cost about $60/linear foot. that's hmm, let's see, we'll get a discount on the concrete, but the transportation costs will outweigh that. so $60/foot, including labor and transportation doesn't seem unreasonable. (if you think companies will donate concrete and cement, you should know there is a shortage right now, construction companies can't get all the cement they want as it is, let alone a surplus)
so, one mile is 5280 feet. 2000 miles is 10,560,000 feet. times $60/foot: $633,600,000. Just for construction. so I guess concrete is out.
so let's take the Border Fence Project. they claim they can build a fence for only $2.50/linear foot. I think they're on crack, but still, that's $23 million, plus much more maintenance (since their fence is barbed wire with electronics) feel free to contribute there, if you really want to.

is appropriate, because I can guarantee two things about this wall/fence, the first, its going to have miles stretched at a time that are NOT going to be manned, and also, the fence will cost BILLIONS, to build and maintain, and will be DEFEATED by most methods that cost less than 100 dollars. In other words, the wall/fence is a FUCKING WASTE OF TIME AND MONEY!!!

my point was that the Stasi couldn't completely protect a ten mile concrete fence, with spotlights, mines, dogs and armed guards at regular intervals. And we think we can do 3000 miles? it's a joke.
But if private individuals want to build a fence on their property, that's their problem, as long as they comply with all relevant envrionmental, construction and antiquities laws.

Hadrian's Wall was much shorter, designed to stop Briton and Pictish raids into Roman territory, and it didn't work, same for the Great Wall of China, didn't stop the Mongolian Empire from forming, and didn't even slow down Ghengis and Kublai Khan conquering and ruling China, now did it? Its stupidity run amok, period.

hasn't happened and present no evidence to support that statement is obtuse. A number of South American countries have reported an influx of middle easterners into their countries. I suppose none of them have plans on heading north huh? If any of them did I suppose you would claim they were just daisy picking in the dessert and would have turned back once they got to our border.

It sure is easy to make claims about terrorists crossing the border. This is the first I have heard of an influx of middle easterners in SA. Sounds kinda like what the prez is doing to scare all of us. Sure is odd to see that logic used here on DU.
BTW, how do you pick daisies in a dessert? Would they be stuck in the cake frosting? Can you bake them right into the pie crust? LOL

Your President surely finds that an all-purpose excuse.
What about this "desire to assimilate"? Sounds a bit too Borg-ish for me.
The Minutemen will NOT be able to build the fence. Most landowners along The Border will NOT allow it--the landowners who are not snowbirds with Retirement Ranchettes, that is. These guys don't need anyone to tote guns for them, either--they have their own guns.
Of course, the REAL reason the Minutemen will fail is that they will fall over from heatstroke after the first hour. It gets pretty hot down along The Border.

He's not my president. Second, assimilation is very important. I was appalled that the protest rallys that included taking down the American flag and raising the Mexican flag. The message that sends to me is that those in the protest who committed that act believe that the Mexican laws and governments should be the law and not the laws that you and I value. It's also an act that says "this is our land"; which some of the marchers were actually shouting. Some held signs speaking of conquest. Are you hearing me Burke? Border control and assimilation are very important. I also believe that most of the land owners WILL allow it. I have yet to see one land owner come forward and say "I feel safe in my home while people without background checks pass through my yard at 2am in the middle of the night. I don't care if some have committed violent crimes like rape or murder back home or if they are drug lords looking to conquer new territory. They can use my yard to make their unlawful entry. Oh, and never mind the trash they leave on the beautiful landscape that makes up my yard." Think about it BURKE! Look I welcome those who come legally. I value the rich friendship and fellowship I have developed with immigrants. I even appreciate some aspects of their culture. But by God we have to know who is coming and going. Just my 2 cents. I appreciate your views and in no way am I trying to demean your view points. I just think you should rethink this.

|
That I've lived in Texas. I saw ONE instance of the US flag being taken down--I believe it originated on the Malkin harridan's website. Carrying a Mexican flag means pride in one's roots--not a desire for the US government to ape the Mexican government. You read the message wrong. (I get my eyes examined once a year.)
Border control is worth considering. However, many landowners will NOT allow The Fence. (How many of them do you know?) Most of them do NOT have "beautiful landscape" yards--things are pretty bare down there, once you get past the Valley.
Assimilation sucks. People can be good Americans--or welcome visitors--& still be proud of their roots. We don't need a white-bread blandness in the USA. We've never HAD that in Texas.

All you can Eat Buffet restaurants and then roll about 50 of these Hogzillas into position? Might need 60 just to be safe, after all it's 2000 miles - then mortar between them and Voila, an impenetrable "fence" composed of giant fatass idiots impossible to clamber over.. and think of the SHADE they would provide for those on the other side?
And if one died (you know, congestive heart failure, inability to breath THROUGH FAT), you just get out the crane and dump another Hogzilla on top of the last one who as he decomposes will create a solid foundation for the piling up of future right wing fatties.. a 2000 mile long wall of human (or subhuman as some may say) FLESH and adipose tissue. And of course the SMELL alone will keep those wiley mexicans from coming NEAR the Great Wall of ASSHOLES. Plus we could dress them all up like Elvis, so the Mexicans will be kept busy painting them on velvet until they pass out and die in utter bliss.. nobody fucks with the KING, especially once he'd become a drug sucking Pig..
Now if you stack them right, face down, then pull their pants down just a little more, beyond the legendary "plumber's butt" we all so enjoy when they repair our household devices, then you'll have a PERFECT FLAGHOLDER facing towards the sky so we can plant the flags of the various states in their asses.
Much like the way they bury people in some portions of the south, face down, with their asses exposed, so that the relatives have a place to park their bicycles when they come to visit their graves..
They have everything they need already, shows how much they know about construction, well, maybe some more chilifries and lard sandwiches for extra buffer..
But of course then there's the SEA on either side, perhaps they could be used as bouys or anchors with net between each lardass - hell, they could stretch that all the way to FRANCE to keep those "cheese eating surrender monkeys" from sneaking onto our soil..
At what point do they tear down the Statue of Liberty, or at least put an AK-47 in her hand to put those poor, starving, yearning to be free party crashers in their place?
(It really might be fun to clone a bunch of these lardos in their lawn chairs and clone them in Photoshop so that they form a human wall from coast to coast - I'd like to see that personally, like the Chimps in Weeds painting of Bush that one guy did..)

If I go birding near the US/Mexican border, am I going to be mistaken for one of these pricks with the binoculars? Because that would really piss me off.
and the whole fence concept is retarded, considering how much land along the border is NOT private property. How many of the illegal immigration migration routes even go through private land?
However, something does have to be done to address the problems of illegal immigration. Some sort of "guest worker" program that actually recognizes the realities of the situation may not be a bad idea. Anything to cut down on the damage being done to the wildlife refuges along the border, for one.

Last time they were out in Douglas, they cost that economically depressed town a half a million dollars in revenue (guess the Minutemen didn't buy as much as the "illegales" do) I say let them...if they are building the fences on private property, then fine. After all, it is the property owners' duty to protect their own property.

The AZ/Mexico border lands includes a military base or two, a national monument, a national wildlife refuge, at least one Indian reservation, and BLM land.

| 146. it's a SYMBOLIC ACTION, people! |
|
... or rather, it's a symbolic action/direct action hybrid, to categorize it more accurately.
Arguments that the Minutemen won't be able to complete the fence due to lack of resources, manpower, permits to build on public land, etc miss the point.
Clearly, the intent of this action is to raise consciousness among potential supporters and to increase the pressure on politicians who have not taken anti-illegal immigration grievances seriously.
Honestly, now: don't you imagine that the MMn are already aware that they haven't the means to build an impermeable barrier from the Gulf to the Pacific?
Consider: if they can demonstrate success in curbing border violations on even just one ranch or reservation, that will be all they need for good press about the fence-building effort. And if trespassing increases in other areas as a result, all the better: those affected will likely be more interested in taking part in the fence project.

What's the problem? Are people here saying that a person doesn't have the right to fence in their property?
