Sen. Lieberman: US could attack some of Iran's nukes
The US is probably incapable of completely destroying the Iranian nuclear program, but as a last resort it could attempt to knock out "some of the components" in order to "delay and deter it," Senator Joe Lieberman, the former Democratic vice presidential candidate and a serving member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, told The Jerusalem Post.

He said, there was skepticism in Congress about the likelihood of the UN Security Council taking "economic or diplomatic action."

Lieberman, who also sits on the Armed Services Committee's Subcommittee on Emerging Threats and Capabilities, added, "The very fact that there is active discussion of the potential - this is not, you know, sort of set war plans, but the discussion of options - does say something. We've come some distance here with regard to Iran, fairly quickly, and I'm not saying that it says without doubt that there'll be military action, but there's been movement... We're taking this very seriously."

I was struggling with a way to describe what Joe was doing in this latest gaffe and nailing his own coffin from the outside seemed to be the only description.

4. So is this a reminder to Dubya that if Uncle Don is shoved aside that
Holy Joe is available for that position?

Or is he just raving again because he thinks the Red Reich will bless him for it?

If I'm Lamont HQ this evening, I'm already issuing a blistering press release about the warmongering incumbent putting the futures of Connecticut citizens at increased risk.

15. Hi, IndianaGreen. Good point. I wonder if Joe saw that he was not
going anyplace within his own party and made a decision to lean right, so that he alone would tend to stand out as the "reasonable, right-leaning" Democrat, the one lone soul in the party, etc. who would work with "the war time president" to "fight terra," etc.

Who knows? In any case, I'm kinda gettin' sick of his right-wing mouth shooting off at exactly the times we need to stick together as a party.

Nice to bump into you tonight on DU.

I say let Iran have some nukes, maybe they'll calm down and not feel so threatened all the time and just concentrate on improving quality of life in their country.

11. This is such a retarded situation, why is Joe making it worse?
Iran shouldn't have nukes. Its really dangerous for Israel and pretty dangerous for US and everybody else. But lets look at the facts:
"He said, there was skepticism in Congress about the likelihood of the UN Security Council taking "economic or diplomatic action.""
really? LET'S LOOK AT WHY NOT. Could it be because wingers called them an outdated debating society, humiliated them, ignored them in starting the Iraq war? Could it be that Bush turned the world against us by trying to render them powerless? And now, lo and behold, Iran is building nukes and NOBODY WANTS TO HELP US. So all the sane options for controlling this situation fine are "off the table", because Bush fucked up. But Lieberman wants to keep nuclear first strike options "on the table", not realizing that having them "on the table" pushes other things "off the table" such as Iran co-operating and nt making them, a situation which could only happen if they didn't feel threatened.

13. *blink* Lieb. ALREADY lowering goals for striking Iran!
It took months for Bush to lower the goals for our Iraq war, but Lieberman is already making the goal of a strike merely SLOWING the Iran nuke program.

Hey, Joe, you're supposed to wait until after the strike fails before you claim that slowing down the program is what you planned all along.

If we are planning on Iran getting the bomb someday, why would we start a nuclear blood feud by killing a few thou Iranians just to slow down the bomb making? It's the reason why the Bushian strike is a bad idea, but Lieberman just makes it seem like the PLAN.

35. You got it, about Joe being 'R'
Edited on Tue Apr-18-06 10:19 AM by Jose Diablo
Now think about this.

Somehow this poseur was selected to be on the Democratic Party ticket in 2000 as vice president. Now how did that happen if Joe is really an 'R'? Do you see a problem with this picture of reality?

Edit to add: Here is the deal. The spectrum of what parties represent in the case of making war are not that different between D and R. The war hawks are spread throughout both parties. Socially Joe is a Dem. But when it comes to war and protecting his precious Israel, well Joe loves war. It makes him rich, rich I say.

I should also say, that Joe votes social, unless it interfers with profit, then he is conservative.

43. Actually, what Lieberman says here makes sense
Of course, the overwhelmingly pacifist DU community would naturally rule out any and all military action against Iran regardless of the circumstances.

But those of us who still live in the real world understand that force is always an option. Lieberman is particularly realistic in this regard, noting that the military option in Iran is basically limited to air strikes and that at best those strikes would delay rather than destroy Iran's nuclear capability.

Seriously, Israel knocked out Iraq's nuclear capability in the 80s when it bombed a nuclear reactor. So airstrikes have been used before.

I swear, all you have to do is put Lieberman in the subject header and DU'ers go ballistic. It really would be comical if it weren't so disturbing.
