Arrest of Official Prompts Probe By House Panel Into DHS Hiring
By Ernesto Londoño and Spencer S. Hsu

The arrest of a Department of Homeland Security deputy press secretary on charges that he used a computer to seduce and send pornography to a child has triggered a congressional inquiry into hiring practices and security clearance policies at the department.

Brian J. Doyle was chatting online with Polk County, Fla., detectives Tuesday night when investigators arrived at his Silver Spring house with an arrest warrant. He thought he was corresponding online with a 14-year-old cancer survivor, Florida police said....

***

Rep. Peter T. King (R-N.Y.), who chairs the House Homeland Security Committee, scheduled a hearing May 18 to examine whether the department's guidelines on screening employees and issuing security clearances are adequate.

"What if the person on the other end had been a member of al-Qa'ida or a similar terrorist organization and used this information to blackmail Mr. Doyle?" King said yesterday in a statement.

(Polk County Sheriff Grady) Judd said that is why his office rushed the investigation. Internet pedophile investigations can last several months and often culminate in arranged meetings with the would-be victim....

2. Now this is a story worth talking about -- tip and iceberg

are the words that come to mind.

Remember when Bush gave that speech at the UN and mentioned "sex trading or something to that effect?"

3. kick & recommend..
This will be worth watching..
Eventually all the scandals will have a single point of connection, I believe, and the intersecting point will be right there in the oval office of the President of the United States of America.

4. As icky as this story is, I don't think it's all that easy
to determine who is a sex offender unless they've had a prior record. I don't know if they do psychometric testing or not, but even with that, I don't think you can ever really know. So reveiwing the security clearance procedures is a bit of waste of time and $ in my view, unless they find this guy had a prior. THEN the shit will really hit the fan.

5. Something tells me that this creep has been creepy all along

It wouldn't take a rocket scientist to figure this nutcase had problems.

Homeland Security is a JOKE and Jeffie Boy Gannon will probably replace Chernoff.

Of course he will have his office in the Lincoln Bedroom.

8. They spy on the rest of us.
How about checking his computer? There must have been evidence in his computer.

If they can engage in warrantless spying on unaccused U.S. citizens, certainly they can investigate their employees.

10. I somehow doubt this will be a long conversation, but...
Apart from the red herring of making this some how about fundies, your description of child molestation as "pok(ing) children" is highly insensitive, and really downright crude and uncalled for.

12. You are absoolutely right.
My comment was assinine, and way off base.

I'll redact, if possible.

7. Another one, eh?
Doyle is the second department official recently arrested.

Let us wander the corridors of history to...oh, say last year.

Frank Figueroa, a 49 year old man who oversees Immigration and Customs Enforcement operations in Florida, has pleaded not guilty to charges that he exposed himself to a girl at an Orlando mall last year.

Yes. I know he has yet to go to trial.

But, I also know that if there were scant evidence, the DA might very well shrink from inditing a man in Figueroa's position.

We shall see...

9. talking head on CNN last night (Situation room)
the talkinghead tried to tamp things down. basically said we shouldn't be jumping to conclusions about the "ALLEGED" incident... the spin machine is working hard to make this go away from the headlines

meanwhile -- snip from the WP article....

DOYLE IS A VICTIM OF DEPRESSION

Doyle's attorney, Barry Helfand, said yesterday that depression may have led his client to reach out to the supposed teenager online.

"Sometimes there is something that runs amiss with a human being that is doing all the right things," Helfand said yesterday after a brief hearing in Rockville, during which Doyle requested an extradition hearing. "Mr. Doyle has risen to some of the highest levels of our government, and I understand he has a spotless record."

13. twenty three charges... investigation was over a month
doesn't look good for Doyle - or for those trying to defend him as if doing so was defending bushco.

14. yeah, but
:sarcasm: we shouldn't be jumping to conclusions.... he may be a victim of the media....mumble...mumble...

had a thought during the day about this case and the circumstances in which he was caught -- wondering if his lawyer will try to get him off by claiming it was entrapment... don't think it will fly, but who knows who is in who's pocket
