Senators Ask Rumsfeld To Simplify Military Voting
Senators Ask Rumsfeld To Simplify Military Voting
March 22, 2006 8:00 a.m. EST
Denise Royal - All Headline News Staff Writer

Washington D.C. (AHN) - Twelve senators want to make it easier for troops abroad to vote. The lawmakers say the current system is outdated – and they want Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld to fix it.

The seven Republicans and five Democrats have written Rumsfeld with their suggestions. The senators want the Pentagon to create a new voting system that would allow members of the military to easily "request, receive, download and print" absentee ballots regardless of their location.

Under the current system, they must contact local officials by regular mail and request a ballot, which is then mailed to them. The voter then must fill out the ballot by hand and send it back to his or her state, again by regular mail.

Republican Conrad Burns, of Montana, prepared the letter and is planning legislation to make the process easier. He says the current process is unacceptable.

"How many people, we have in the Military? Two Million? OK, they all vote Republican. See? You asked if I could 'fix the 'problem'? I know all ABOUT 'fixing' problems!"

4. Our Constitution says "The Times, Places and Manner of holding Elections
for Senators and Representatives, shall be prescribed in each State by the Legislature thereof; but the Congress may at any time by Law make or alter such Regulations, except as to the Places of chusing Senators."

It's either up to each state or congress to change voting procedures and absolutely not Rumsfeld's job.
