And yet another reason to love New England.

Congratulations, New Hampshire!

March 21, 2006

CONCORD, N.H. --The New Hampshire House voted overwhelmingly Tuesday against a proposed amendment to the state constitution to ban gay marriage.

The late afternoon vote was 207-125. The amendment would have defined marriage as the union of one woman and one man.

State law does not permit gays and lesbians to marry in New Hampshire, nor does the state recognize marriages and civil unions performed out of state.

But supporters of the amendment insisted it was needed to prevent the courts from forcing a decision, as happened in Vermont and Massachusetts. Gay-marriage supporters had said no such lawsuits were planned in New Hampshire.

1. I don't anticipate any new gay marriage lawsuits...
until Clarence Thomas chokes to death on a pubic hair in his Coke.

2. Here's the roll call
The roll call on the vote can be found here:

A note on NH legislative terminology...

The vote was on the reccommendation by the Judiciary Committee that the proposed amendment be found "Inexpedient To Legislate". In other words, a "Yes" vote was a vote to kill the proposed constitutional amendment.

Just wanted to make sure we were clear on that before I was mistakenly attacked for supporting the thing!
