Friends of murdered US hostage urge no retribution

Friends of U.S. peace activist Tom Fox, who was kidnapped and killed in Iraq, cited his stance against retribution on Saturday and called for the remembrance of all victims of violence around the world.

Members of the Langley Hill Friends Meeting, a peace group in northern Virginia to which Fox belonged, read a statement he co-wrote in October 2004 in which he shunned violence, even to rescue him should he ever be kidnapped.

"We reject violence to punish anyone who harms us," said Doug Smith, quoting Fox, in a statement read to reporters at the group's headquarters in McLean, Virginia.

"We forgive those who consider us their enemies," Fox's statement continued

9. American apparently tortured before death

An American aid worker taken hostage with three other peace activists was apparently tortured before he was shot in the head and chest and his body dumped near a railroad line in Baghdad, Iraqi police said Saturday.

Tom Fox, a 54-year-old member of Christian Peacemaker Teams from Clear Brook, Va., was the fifth American hostage killed in Iraq. There was no immediate word on his fellow captives, a Briton and two Canadians.

Fox's body was found near a railway line in Dawoudi, a mixed Sunni-Shiite area that has been largely shielded from violence. Shocked local residents on Saturday condemned Fox's abduction and killing.

"These acts are terrorist ones and will hinder the political process and distort the reputation of Iraq," said Dhamir al-Samaraie, who had come to see where Fox was found.

16. God Bless Tom Fox. He gave his life for peace and justice.

Don't worry about how his death will be used. Remember him. He is a martyr not to the politics of the moment, but to the great principles for which he lived. Peace. Love. Living by eternal principles. This is what Tom Fox stood for, as did MLK, Gandhi, Bobby Kennedy and so many others, regardless of specific religion. Let's not ever forget him. Many will fear him, from now on.

I'm so glad you posted this. Why can't we simply honor this man's life & all he worked for - instead of immediately trying to speculate about how this, also, could be Bush's fault? This man was a hero & we can take a moment to respect his work & his sacrifice. We could all learn from him.

Then, I sadly lowered my head, as I realized. Us. How can we expect mercy and fairness from the world, when have none for them. RIP Mr. Fox. What an amazingly strong, good, and brave, man. If all Christians behaved such as those volunteers, I might rethink my athiest ways.
