Bush Drums Up Money, Support, for Ga. GOP
Bush Drums Up Money, Support, for Ga. GOP

COLLEGE PARK, Ga. -- It took well under two hours of President Bush's time Thursday to fatten the Georgia GOP's bank account by at least $1.3 million.

Republican Gov. Sonny Perdue is running for re-election and two former GOP congressman are trying to unseat Democratic incumbents in the state.

But the money Bush helped raise at a dinner here also could eventually benefit Ralph Reed, the former Christian Coalition leader whose ties to disgraced lobbyist Jack Abramoff have tripped up his race for lieutenant governor. Reed faces a Republican challenger in the state's July primary election. If he wins, the party would have to decide whether to help him in the fall against the Democratic candidate.

"I'm glad to help support the Republican Party of Georgia, which is changing this state for the better," Bush told the state party's annual President's Day Dinner, which attracted an afterwork crowd of hundreds of well-heeled supporters to the modern Georgia International Convention Center outside Atlanta.

Bush give big pat on the back to Perdue
SHANNON McCAFFREY

COLLEGE PARK, Ga. - President Bush urged some of his biggest fans in Georgia on Thursday night to help re-elect Gov. Sonny Perdue, referring to the fellow Republican executive as "a fella" and "big buddy." But it was a comment about the war in Iraq that drew the biggest applause.

At the $1,000-per-plate dinner, Bush spoke for 35 minutes about the Republican Party's influence on Georgia politics as well as a defense of his administration's domestic eavesdropping program, tax cuts and the war in Iraq.

"Getting rid of Saddam Hussein has made America safer and the world a better place," Bush said, drawing the loudest, sustained response of the night from the Republican donors gathered in the cavernous Georgia International Convention Center, not far from Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.

Outside, about 75 protesters chanted and held signs in opposition of the war.

1. Georgia republicans. Too much money, no brains whatsoever.
Pretty much a party standard.

2. Get the F*UCK out of my Democratic state, Diebold and their GOP!
Sonny can shove that miniature carpetbagger Reed up his fat un-American ass.

All Georgians should be ashamed of how we treated Max Cleland.

3. Perdue and Bush: Fuck you both. Bastards. Get out of my state.
I personally told Perdue I'd never vote for a Republican when he asked for my vote while running for election. He is a lying, cheating, hypocritcal, wingnut, idiot. :grr:
