Arroyo cracks down on Left, Right foes (Philippines)
Filipino dictator Gloria Macapagal Arroyo is busy arresting members of Congress, something that her friend Bush would like to do in America!

Arroyo cracks down on Left, Right foes
Party-list solon nabbed; 4 more in House custody

SHRUGGING OFF threats of arrest, four leftist lawmakers strode into the halls of Congress yesterday and declared that it was an honor to be on President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo’s “enemies list.”

Spurred by Ms Arroyo’s proclamation of a state of national emergency on Friday, police also placed under house arrest Chief Superintendent Marcelino Franco, the sacked chief of the Special Action Force, and put three other police officers under “restrictive custody.”

The lawmakers were among 16 people against whom police had filed charges of rebellion in connection with their alleged involvement in a plot to overthrow Ms Arroyo.

Police did not arrest the militant legislators, but after negotiating with Speaker Jose de Venecia, they agreed that the top House leader would have custody of them within the confines of the Batasang Pambansa.

The arrangement would last pending the outcome of a formal investigation of the charges of rebellion and coup d’état filed against them.

1. Gloria Arroyo
How long does she think she can hold down the fort? In another article, it said that the US will be sending 5,500 marines. That's not nearly enough. That will secure the royal palace, but not much more.

The Philippines has 85 million people. If the vast majority of them are fed up with Arroyo, she is finished.

3.  Geez, you have to wonder where Bush is going to find these extra Marines!
It's not as if he's got a lot of people with nothing to do in the armed forces anymore!

Didn't know the Philappines had such a large population. Thanks for the info.

Bush busses bitty buddy's bitty grandbaby!

4. US expresses opposition to unconstitutional moves by Philippine military

US expresses opposition to unconstitutional moves by Philippine military

The United States has expressed its opposition to any move by the Philippine military to get involved in the political crisis in the country, after some soldiers staged an anti-government protest Sunday night, the daily Manila Standard- Today reported on Tuesday.

The paper quoted the U.S. Embassy in Manila as saying in a statement on Monday that Washington advocates the use of peaceful solution through constitutional procedures.

"We strongly believe in the principle and practice of civilian control of a professional and nonpolitical military," the U.S. Embassy said.

The report quoted Bunye as saying that "the U.S. hand appeared" after intelligence reports said one of the alleged plotters in coup attempts made a phone call to a U.S. official in Washington during a meeting with Jose Cojuangco, cousin of former president Cory Aquino.

Who doesn't remember that immediately after the attempted military coup in Venezuela, U.S. ambassador was seen in public running to throw his spindly arms around the temporary President-for-a-Day, Pedro Carmona. The Bush administration appeared to support the coup-plotters totally (some of whom had been brought to Washington, D.C. to confer with Bush's State Department people, like Otto Reich, PRIOR to the coup attempt), and Condoleeza Rice even commented that Hugo Chavez had brought it upon himself.

6. Arroyo going the way of Marcos
It's just a matter of time.

The question is, how many pairs of shoes will she slink away with?
