Attack Shows al-Qaida Can Still Strike

MANAMA, Bahrain (AP) - Al-Qaida on Saturday vowed more attacks on Saudi oil facilities, a day after an attempt to bomb the world's biggest oil processing complex showed the group still can strike inside the kingdom.

A strike on the Abqaiq complex, near Saudi Arabia's eastern Persian Gulf coast, could have been devastating. Nearly two-thirds of the country's oil flows through the facility for processing before export.

Foiling the attack demonstrated Saudi Arabia's success in putting tough security around the oil industry, the source of the royal family's wealth, oil analysts said.

Two suicide bombers in explosives-packed cars traded fire with police at a checkpoint before a gate in the first of three fences around the sprawling, heavily guarded complex. One bomber collided with the closed gate, exploding and blowing a hole in the fence, a senior Saudi security official said.

3. It was only a matter of time before the Saudi oil structure was attacked

Al-Queda has been studying the US, and has realized our Achille's heel is our addiction to foreign oil. Hit us there, and we implode in a downward spiral of economic collapse. At $5/gallon for gasoline, our economy would grind to a halt as the working poor can no longer afford to get to work and pay their bills. Without the working poor to keep the base of the economy running, it all comes tumbling down. I made that comment to a friend in college after 9/11 occurred, and honestly I'm surprised it took this long for an attack to occur.

5. Here is the key sentence from that article

Crude oil prices jumped by more than $2 a barrel on world markets after the attack.

Let me repeat that:

Crude oil prices jumped by more than $2 a barrel on world markets after the attack.

"Foiled" attack on refinery ... price of oil goes up.

Lovely.

6. No, here's the key quote
"Foiling the attack demonstrated Saudi Arabia's success in putting tough security around the oil industry, the source of the royal family's wealth, oil analysts said."

Translation: Middle East countries are fighting terrorism, foiling attacks, and will do the same for US ports.

Foiled attack, sure, just like the phony LA foiled attack that city officials never heard of.
