Feds Move to Protect Polar Bears
Federal Government Takes First Step Toward Listing the Polar Bears As Threatened Species

ANCHORAGE, Alaska Feb 7, 2006 (AP)— The federal government on Tuesday took the first step toward listing the polar bear as a threatened species. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service said protection may be warranted under the Endangered Species Act, triggering a review process that could lead to its listing.

The service acted on a petition filed by the Center for Biological Diversity, which said polar bears could become extinct by the end of the century because their sea ice habitat is melting away due to global warming.

The Fish and Wildlife Service concluded that the petition "presents substantial scientific and commercial information indicating that listing the polar bear may be warranted."

The Fish and Wildlife Service must be operating independently from the government, I'm sure wonder boy in the WH wouldn't approve of a noble cause.

Polar Bear Species Under Endangerment Review
February 8, 2006

http://www.allheadlinenews.com/articles/7002308145

Anchorage, AK (AHN) - The federal government is working to determine whether polar bears should be considered a threatened species as global warming is melting away the icy habitats where they live.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service says protection may be warranted under the Endangered Species Act, beginning a review process to consider if the bears should be listed.

The agency will seek information about population distribution, habitat, effects of climate change on the bears and their prey, potential threats from development, contaminants and poaching during the next 60 days.

The review follows a petition filed by the Center for Biological Diversity of Joshua Tree, Calif., last year that says polar bears could become extinct by the end of the century because their sea ice habitat is melting away.
