Bono challenges Washington to tithe one per cent of the budget to the poor

WASHINGTON (AP) - Quoting from Islamic, Jewish and Christian texts, rock star Bono called Thursday for the U.S. government to give an additional one per cent of the federal budget to the world's poor.

Speaking to President George W. Bush and members of Congress at the National Prayer Breakfast, the U2 front man said it's unjust to keep poor people from selling their goods while singing the virtues of the free market, to hold children to ransom for the debts of their grandparents and to withhold medicines that would save lives.

"God will not accept that," he said. "Mine won't. Will yours?"

Bono's speech riveted the ballroom audience that included the president and first lady and leaders from Congress, the cabinet, the military, the clergy and countries from around the world. At every table, Bono had distributed white plastic bracelets from The ONE Campaign to fight AIDS and poverty, and Sen. Hillary Clinton was among those who wrapped it around her fingers while she listened.

(snip)

"The thing about this good citizen of the world is he's used his position to get things done," Bush said. "You're an amazing guy, Bono. God bless you."

11. I should have been more clear - apologies

yes, that's the definition.

In practice, however, it's often used far more loosely -- as a set percentage of one's earnings.

And I agree with your other point as well -- I'll bet you not one does, either!

8. I think it should be the U.S. poor FIRST.
Fuck all of this foreign aid!

I'm tired of all of our taxes and our country's money (and jobs) going somewhere else
to establish other country's health care and retirement, financial stability etc.,
when there are too many poor and middle class going down the toilet here!
Our own country is going financially down the toilet and taking all of it's citizens with it.:hurts:

(Except for the wealthy, of course)

So Bono wants to encourage more money to leave the U.S. so all of us can bite the big one?

Fuck him!:grr:

9. The real tithe
Tithing is polishing the outside of the cup when the inside is still dirty -- to paraphrase Jesus.
Throwing money at a problem is the short-sighted solution. Just because Bono has goofy glasses doesn't mean he has vision. Also, the only person that can make Bush do anything are Karl Rove and Dick Cheney.

I am tired of the goody-two-shoes grandstanding by Bono. If he's so fucking concerned he can give all of his money to the poor.

Just because Bono has cool glasses doesn't mean he has vision.

the poor can collect more cans, donate more blood etc. to cover their part..this is win/win for the administration!
