Speedboat attack on Nigeria rig
Edited on Sun Jan-15-06 04:59 PM by gulfcoastliberal
Gunmen using speedboats have clashed with Nigerian soldiers as they attacked an oil platform operated by Shell in the Niger Delta.

A Shell spokesman said five workers were injured in the attack on the Benisede oil station in Bayelsa state.

There are unconfirmed reports that some soldiers defending the platform and gunmen died in the attack.

The Nigerian army, which has thousands of troops in the Delta, has been unable to prevent attacks by militants who object to the country's oil wealth leaving their region.

2. Great. Pretty soon, I suppose we'll be sending in the Marines...
...so that more American soldiers can die in service to global corporate interests.

6. This is not a "Peak Oil" phenomena!!!
A Peak Oil phenom. would look something like offshore oil interests staging or financing attacks on oil infrastructure in order to squeeze another few billion out of a restricted oil market by selling their own (temporarily flowing) oil.

And this is not that!! So there.

8. Thank goodness it wasn't an LNG terminal, though!

I don't blame those Nigerians for being infuriated from screwed over by the petro companies. They need a version of Chavez who'll nationalize their mineral rights. African countries have some major, major problems, unfortunately.

9. Lest we forget....Biafra!

http://www.american.edu/ted/ice/biafra.htm

"The low sulphur content of Nigerian oil stimulated great international demand, therefore the northerners would not allow Biafra to seceed from the federation. The Biafran war, 1967-1970, resulted in 100,000 military casualties. However, between 500,000 and 2 million Biafran civilians died from starvation during the war."
